Chewie probably has kennel cough

Off we go to the vet tonight, because it looks like Chewie has kennel cough. He kept me up all night, coughing and spluttering. It sounds so awful, and the poor little guy just wanted to be with me on our bed for cuddles (coughing in my face...). He is otherwise well but we will get him looked at.

It felt a bit like a taster of having an unsettled baby. At one point I was sitting on his bed stroking him while he coughed. I'm sure it didn't help, buut it made me feel a little better. :(

Is a bit of honey recommended? Seem to recall Pongo @Rosie has suggested this. Poor Chewie.

we just decided at Monty's recent check up not to have the vaccine - it's not always effective, and as Monty is not in contact with other dogs all day every day, we decided the risk was quite low based on the vet's advice. Also, think this is a live vaccine, so it does give them a very mild dose of it too. Felt Monty has enough going on in his little life

We weren't actually offered the vaccine and it slipped our mind to ask. He has been going to daycare a lot with our renovations so it is probably that.

If I can find the honey I will let him have a bit. It's chaos here at the moment.

Actually... what am I talking about... Chewie has had C5, so he is vaccinated. But there are multiple bugs that cause KC so it probably still is that.

Poor Chewie. Molly had it in her first year and she was the first dog I'd owned who'd caught it. I was shocked at how awful it sounded. However it cleared up in a few days. I bought expensive Manuka honey which she hated and wouldn't touch, though I know lots of people use it to soothe throats. Anyway hope Chewie is over it soon.

Last night was awful. And my OH can just remove his hearing aids and sleep like the dead. Needless to say I was pretty grumpy this morning.

Of course he hardly coughed at the vet. She was in two minds about whether he needs medication, so she gave us some to be given if he doesn't improve in a few days. He does seem to be coughing less, so fingers crossed for tonight!

Poor Chewie and you. Coughing can cause vomiting just by the sheer force of the cough. When Snowie had kennel cough, we called our bedroom the vomitorium. Don’t know why we didn’t cover our wall-to-wall carpets with towels. Much easier to wash towels than wool carpets!

Hope he feels better soon.

Edited to say I’ve heard mixed reviews about the vaccination. Works/doesn’t work. Snowie got the vaccination as a puppy and got kennel cough. Hasn’t been vaccinated again (he’s 7 yo now) and never got it again. My guess is, the older they get, the better their immune system.

Ah, miserable.
Yes, honey is great - doesn't need to be manuka, cheapo tescos seemed to work. I dipped a spoon in it and let it run off til the spoon is just coated; then let Pongo lick the back of the spoon a tiny bit at a time, so he had to swallow each tiny lick and the honey got to coat his throat slowly slowly. It really seemed to soothe the cough (although obviously it isn't a cure). The cough got better on its own, without medication, after a few days.

Pongo developed quite a taste for honey, I'm not convinced he wasn't just pretending to cough before the end...

PS Pongo is vaccinated because that's required by dog boarding etc. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't be too bothered about doing it.
