Coco used to retrieve didn't he? I remember watching your videos of him way back when I was starting out with Cassie.

Yes indeed he did. He's still good at marked retrieves with a regular dummy, but only for a couple - he gets distracted easily now. I'm not sure how to make it more engaging for him, or if that's what he really wants. He was keen to have a go with the pheasant because it was new, but more interested in playing with it! He seems to love the initial set up - we walk out, he heels & sits, I throw. I send him and off he bounds, but often he gets there and decides sniffing is more interesting, and to be honest, he's nearly 12 and if he wants to sniff then I think I should let him be.
Now I'm doing 5 or 6 with Meg (we're onto 2 dummies with direction now), then 1 or 2 with Coco.

Sure . It's just I remember those video's as aspirational when I was seeking the key to get Cass to enjoy retrieving.

So I decided this morning to do some clicker retrieve with Oddy. He's been getting the idea with hand touch quite nicely so I thought maybe time move on a bit.
He clearly does have a strong desire to retrieve and is very mouthy at times, but if a take a dummy on a walk both he and his mother get intensely excited, both racing i off to get it but dropping it on the ground instead of returning it to me. I know he did basic gundog training as youngster, so it's in there somewhere.
So we started at the level of lifting the dummy clear of the ground, which is not foreign to him, but to start with he just sat in front of me, sometimes eye contact , sometimes staring at my treat giving hand. But by moving the dummy about a bit he started to pick it up and I C & T ed when he did so.
BY the end of our 15 treat session he was eagerly running back to pick up the dummy again and enjoying himself.
So I was pleased with him!
