Cooking for her

If you don’t mind the smell, dirty green tripe is a great way to get macerated green veggies and good bacteria into the diet. I feed it raw. My boy looooves his stinkfood.

I expect I could deal with the smell, if I can source it, how do you buy it ? I will ask around, I Have a few butcher contacts. I'm guessing it's not the same as frozen stuff folks buy?

You can’t normally buy it from butchers in the UK because it’s not fit for human consumption (the good, green tripe), so I believe they’re not allowed to handle it in the shops. They might be able to hook you up with an abattoir, though.

@snowbunny can you feed regular tripe? I haven't looked for it here in the UK, but I used to get it at the grocery store in Italy. It's easier to find than plain old raw chicken! But maybe that's not the good stuff. Still smells disgusting though. :sick:

I get frozen green tripe by Natures Menu. It comes in a bag, either in mince form or actual tripe pieces. I have ordered from them directly but found that Pets at Home do it too. It is the most disgusting thing on the planet - I always feed it outside - Maisy loves it!

The white tripe doesn’t have anything like the nutritional value of green, and doesn’t have the digestion soothing properties, either. So it’s not that you can’t feed it, just that it’s not the wonder food that the smelly green is :)

This is what I was hoping, although like everything else the local abattoirs have closed

Thank you @Shaz, that's very useful to know. I'm guessing that for you it's great to have something Maisy loves to eat !

A relief, she is not so picky, although I have been through enough food to know what she likes now. I even get her to eat bits of veg if I hide it in the good stuff!

After reading about the sauerkraut on this thread I thought I would try adding it to Ripple's food for a while. Just because I’ll try virtually anything in the hope it might be the miracle that stops his scavenging habits, working on the belief he may be missing something in his diet. Well Ripple is very :hmm: about the sauerkraut, he’ll eat it but only when it’s the last thing in his bowl. But Toffee, the very first time I took the lid off the jar, going absolutely crazy for the smell :happy: . I gave him a little taste on my fingers and he loves it, now I have to be really careful to put the fork away after I’ve dished it out otherwise he’s trying to steal it off the bench, who’d have thought it .

@SteffiS and @Selina27

Where are you finding sauerkraut in a typical UK grocery store? I looked in the local Tesco yesterday and not a hint of such an exotic item. Though to be fair, it is a small Tesco.

In a larger supermarket, would it be in with the 'foreign food' or with canned vegetables? Or somewhere else?

In Germany each grocery has a WALL of sauerkraut, so I'm not used to having to hunt it down. :rofl:

@Emily_Babbelhund , I found it in Morrisons, not my usual place to shop but I called in specially as they've had a large Polish aisle for years, there's been a big Eastern European community here for years due to it being a soft fruit growing area in the first place. I was pretty sure I would find it there, but I would have thought Aldi or Lidl would stock sauerkraut.

I'll give Morrison's a try as there's one in Newquay only 30 minutes away. A Lidl next to the Morrisons. No Sainsburys anywhere near.

They do in other countries. Although I have to say in places like Italy or Spain, I kind of wonder who they are stocking it for and who buys it. I can't see many Italians falling in love with sauerkraut. :LOL:
