Crufts

I've just arrived in Kenilworth where I'm staying for a couple of nights and having my first ever visit to Crufts tomorrow. I'm actually going as a 'buddy' with the South & South-West Rally team. Very sadly my friend who was on the team has had a sudden bereavement so can't be here, but the team leader has kindly invited me to go along and help anyway. Looking forward to it immensely.

It feels so strange to be away alone without human or doggy company. At home I spend a lot of time, when not doing dog-related things, on music practice - every day an hour on clarinet and two hours on the piano, and a few times a week a bit of classical guitar - so not having anything to do is extremely odd. I've spent an hour lying on my hotel bed watching an old episode of Taskmaster!

I'm not! It's just a retirement hobby. I started clarinet getting on for 4 years ago and I returned to piano in October after a forty year break. I love doing it and it's in my nature to throw myself wholeheartedly into things - plus at my age I don't have time on my side! After an hour on clarinet my lips give out but I get caught up in piano and the hours fly by.

I've had a great day - all the team members were so welcoming. I spent the day mostly doggy-sitting (as a safety measure/ to prevent dog-theft, once the dogs are inside they're not allowed out until 4pm) - there is a wood shavings toilet area. However I also watched some of the Rally, which was interesting as I think it's a much more difficult place for a dog to perform than at a normal show - VERY noisy and a huge arena. In fact it must be because the dogs selected for the teams are obviously the best in normal circumstances but there were very few flawless rounds. The Northern team came in first place, second was Midland, 3rd Wales, 4th South East and East Anglia, 5th Scotland and joint 6th South West and Northern Ireland.
I had some time in the middle of the day to walk around the halls. Did a little bit of shopping - lead and dog treats. It was Pastoral and Working day for the Breed showing so I watched a little but as it was still at the individual breed stage I couldn't really see much difference between one beautiful Briard and another, so I didn't find that very interesting. I was surprised that the Breed 'rings' were just areas of carpet with chairs alongside for the audience (the Rally ring was properly fenced) - the dogs did well to focus.
Got lost on the way back to the hotel but made it in the end now flaking out before the journey home tomorrow.

Home again and I've been reflecting on the Crufts experience from the dogs' point of view. Naturally I was disappointed that Molly & I weren't picked for the South East Team but now I've seen what it's like there I'm beginning to think it was just as well as I'm not sure how happy Molly would have been in that environment. Apart from the noise and crowds there is a LOT of waiting around. I saw a lot of dogs who looked genuinely relaxed and happy to snooze the day away in their cubby-holes but I also saw a fair number who looked as if they were bored and simply tolerating it.
When I take Molly to live shows I do my best to make sure she has an interesting day, so when not competing I take her off for walks away from the show ground, and have always managed to find a space for an off-lead wander - and at several venues have found a stream for a paddle. She spends a minimum amount of time in the car alone - just when I'm walking the course/going to the loo! But at Crufts this isn't possible so I'd have to think hard about how any dog I was entering would feel about it.
