So far a LOT of references to labradors!

Tooth brushing number 1 .... anything else more of a adjunct...


Risks of antlers etc... HARD rule of thumb ... soft enough to make an indention with thumbnails... big bones too hard eg knucklebones, risk is teeth are scraping up and down ( fine...) but in between pointy teeth = pressure = wrong angle and broken teeth. Increased risk of fracture not worth benefits of giving ( hard bones etc..)

Tooth paste is fine... not human...vet specific...

Toothpaste more of a lubricant, "brushing" more important but acknowledges flavour makes experience more pleasurable ( mentions labradors again!!!! )

Yes.. but he is very easy on the eye!

Yes... but really doesn't see much benefit... labradors may just break and swallow in 2 / 3 pieces..

Dry diet vs wet diet? He doesn't really care... just brush their teeth!

Interesting! My vet asked me yesterday what I did with Quinn's teeth because she has zero tartar at 5 - I brush 1-2 times per week and give her a daily dental chew (VOHC approved). But I think it's partially genetic....

Worn down to the pulp? Comes down to fractured teeth... pulp is live = exposed/live and PAINFUL - ultimately pulp becomes infected = root infected. Two treatment options canine teeth with pulp exposure = root canal or extraction - 300 root canals per year, rid of risk of complications

denta sticks - are OK ... can't rely on only method of plaque control ( enter BRUSHING)

Mid back teeth act as scissors, so by working against each other less risk of gum disease... rear molars worse in older dogs...

Carrots? No problems but most chews are designed to break down in stomach.. .other non-approved dental chews may increase risk of obstruction, so supervise carefully.

Smelly breath? Actually dead tooth pulp ( fracture/damaged..) can smell...check with vet..

My vet was astonished and commented to David at how white Charlie's teeth are at over 10 years old. David told her "Helen brushes his teeth" she said "I wish all dog owners brushed their dogs teeth" Not a spec of anything on his pearly whites!! xx
