Dew claw

Poor Jazz split a dew claw yesterday. Ruth took her to the vets this morning and they decided to remove it under local anaesthetic. She’s feeling a bit sorry for herself tonight and being a bit clingy. For the next few days we have to stick to clean walks - no zoomies, especially through muddy water. She’s not going to be happy with that but its for her own good.

With luck she will be back to her happy normal self tomorrow. Poor little mite x

Poor little Jazz, I do hope she's soon back to her usual Jazzy little self!
Didn't they remove dew claws on puppies as a matter of course years ago? I seem to remember being offered dew claw removal for one of my pups and declining it as it felt a bit like sending a child for finger nail removal😱

Snowie split his dew claws a couple of times. They grew back just fine. I just kept them clean. And he helped by licking them, once licked the broken one clean off.

Dew claw removal in puppies is now considered cruel, like tail and ear docking. Snowie used his dew claws for holding a bone or chewie. And I’ve seen videos of dogs in ice using their dew claws to grip.
