Dew Claws!!!!!!

The SBD has dew claws like little sickles and they need regular trimming otherwise they are potentially lethal. They need doing now. Last night one claw got caught in my hand and ripped my index finger from the palm to the second knuckle! What joy and blood everywhere! Probably needed a couple of stiches but pulled it all together with sticking plasters. SBD most concerned and kept pushing her head between my knees.

Right - clippers and emery board out tonight and closing that barn door before any more horses bolt.

They do seem to grow fast! Snowie has ripped one off due to my lack of cutting—it grew too long and I guess hooked onto something when he was hoolying around.

Sorry about your own injury! Those claws can get sharp!

Sorry for your paw, @David! hope it knits quickly with minimal incovenience (although it does make a lot of things tricky for a bit, poor thing).

@snowbunny - is this part of your cooperative care regime? It's nail trimming that's still a massive stress for me as Kipper won't stay still (not keen, poor fella); I'm hoping our cooperative care training will solve this eventually.

Ouch sounds nasty. Must admit I get the kennels to cut Red’s nail’s (they have a grooming service) - I am too chicken to do them myself. Sky has never needed hers cutting - not even the dew claws

I need to sort a table here to keep going with the cooperative care. When I was in Spain, I would do that every day. To be honest, they're all pretty OK with the nail trimming now. Willow is the only one who is still a bit anti, so J sits next to her and strokes her while I do it. I'm not entirely happy with this, as I think she believes she has no choice, but I go through her foot really quickly, and she gets massive treats afterwards - she also always goes really silly afterwards. Once I have access to the table again, I'll get back into making it really choice-based for her, but she's already so much better than she was.

Lady hates anything with an electric motor anywhere near her so I'm down to clippers and/or sand paper.

I think you can make faster progress with clippers. I left mine in Spain, though. Willow will not tolerate them at all, and screams if they touch her nail, even if they're closed. Because I can use the Dremel, I've not spent any time working on that with her. The other three dogs are just as good with clippers as with the Dremel.

Ouch! Hope it isn't too sore @David

Maxx used to be perfectly fine getting his clipped but suddenly he wont let us near them. They are way long but we are doing the gentle and slow 'get used to the clippers' strategy all over again.

He's going to the vet in Saturday, can you ask him to do it or is that a bit below them?

Our vet will clip nails if she thinks they’re needed—part of the consultation fee. Not below her at all. A vet we went to when Snowie was a puppy charged a separate fee—it’s written on a poster on the wall. I’m guessing she got people coming in saying: just clip his nails quickly, we don’t need anything else.
