Dog shows

Maybe I`m being silly , but am quite alarmed at the number of dog shows being held down here at the moment . Most seem to be the fun type ones, incorporating agility and other games , but they all seem to be held on fields, offering little or no shade or respite from the heat . I guess its the same all over the UK right now, but it topped 29 degrees here this afternoon , \I made Nelly stay indoors , we have just been to the shady woods for 15 minutes and apart from her beach play at 8.45 this morning , that's it . I tend to think its highly irresponsible to be holding dog shows when the sun is blazing down , anyone else ?? xx

Yes I agree, too hot. It's our village show next week where there is always a dog show and I won't be taking Hattie & Charlie even though I am sure they would win :p as it's at 2 pm and no shade. When I went to the Highclere Country show it was hot, there were a lot of miserable dogs, anxious dogs, and owners that were totally unaware of this :( xx

hm - on a slightly related topic, I'm quite suprised during our first summer as proud dog owners:p how many supermarkets don't have fixed shade in their car parks. We leave him in the car as little as possible, but if you need to get a pint of milk on the way home from somewhere, it's sometimes impossible to find a shaded area of a car park - so we don't stop. It can't just be dog-owners who're drawn to shade, so I'm suprised this isn't thought about.

Guide Dogs have a fun day coming up on Saturday. No Guide Dog stock is allowed to attend due to the heat. That won’t be easy for GD owners as they’ll have to use long canes, but it’s the right decision for the dogs.

What the general public do with their pet dogs will be up to them.

Yes, I absolutely agree that dog shows should be cancelled in this heat. We had a show in my village last week, I would have taken Cassie but not in this heat. She normally comes every where with me, but since this heatwave began has only been out in the car once , to the vets for her annual booster. I would rather know that she is safe and comfortable and cut short a visit than expose her to this heat. She's so sensible at home, just doesn't exert herself at all.

Our (Victoria, Australia) kennel club has a heat policy for all dog events but nothing is called off until the temperature hits 35°. I'd tend not to do much with Ella once it's above 30° though.

There aren’t any official cutoffs for Flyball here but in practice it’s also about 35 degrees C. Shade and paddling pools must be provided.

I prefer to avoid doing anything with Obi when it’s over 30 though...it’s too hot for a furry animal.
