Dog Sitter

When we got Vanilla it was easy as next door used to come in and help every few hours. She had a baby just before xmas, so she was out of the question. The other daughter of a friend who helped once Vanilla was older, is also unable to help during the week on a consistent basis. She is at Uni and she is now discovering other things…

So that let us to having to look for a new dog sitter. That is hard finding someone you think you could trust as you red their profile on the web. Even asking people who have used someone in the past is proving difficult, especially as a lot of people leave their dog outside.

Anyhow we spoke to a few over the last few days and saw one lady yesterday. She only lives about 5min away and does not work. She could commit to a visit at 11am to fall in line with Honey’s feeding schedule, so that was a good thing.

When she came for a ‘Meet & Greet’ I took my cue from Vanilla. I know this sounds weird, but I have found Vanilla is pretty good in spotting people she does not like. Anyhow that went well and the way the person interacted with them was good. We had a chat got to know each other, asked her how she would do things and explained how we train them and what we want her to do whilst she is here ie: Feeding Honey, leave a Kong when she leaves, use our cues, don’t let them play after Honey has eaten etc.

We are going to try her for the next 4 weeks, but on a week by week trial. She is then going on holiday for 3 weeks, and if all goes well, she will come back.

Now we just have to plug the whole for 3 weeks when she is not here.

That all sounds very promising, and I really hope that it works out with this lady. If it doesn't, then I suggest Facebook - I know you're not on FB, but it's an excellent way to source help like this. So many small businesses forego websites and just have a social media page, or you can join a local dog group and ask for advice. Then you can delete your account once you're done :D

Very sensible to take your cue from Vanilla,
I have always done this with Sky.

A few years ago a friend of mine convinced me that her brother would be just the right person to look after Sky when we needed. I left her with him for an afternoon. When I went to collect her, I could just tell she was miserable. He had fed her but I saw no evidence of a water bowl. On the way home, she cried in the car. I will never forget it - I felt so very guilty. I don’t think he was unkind to her but ........ . She never went back.

First week out of the way with the pet sitter. Worked well and she is really nice. First 2 days OH was at home due to various factors. I think that made it easier on the pet sitter, as OH talked her through everything again and could show on first day. Plus gave her chance to talk and re-inforce how we train them etc. She was appaled that some people use adverse methods, so that was good. Booked in again for next few weeks until she goes on holiday. If all goes well and both are happy she will gladly continue on...

So glad it’s working out for you. I always take my cues from Harley. At the end of the day, they are our family and I too am very wary of who I leave her with. Finding a dog walker was a task, so I can understand where you are coming from.

Trust your dog!! Hunter is also very good at knowing who he likes/dislikes(vets are a different matter). It is very hard finding somebody and trusting them. You could also install a camera at home if that helps, or do you have one already? I have 2 South Colombian students who take turns with Hunter. I actually did a sneaky stalk and saw Hunter walking (good as gold ) tail high and obviously enjoying himself! They are used to big dogs and just love him. It is hard as he is my family and we are also very wary of who walks with him.

No not got any cameras yet, but on my list to get this weekend.
I always take cue out of Vanilla, as plenty of times we have been for a walk and someone wants to say hello, and I may not like the loom of them. Vanilla will start to approach, but then all of a sudde turn round and come back. I like it...

I have to admit, I ended up WFH today. Stayed quiet upstairs just to hear. I know freaky, but wanted to listen....

I was always a bit worried about Stanley and our dog walker.

Until I was out walking him one day and we saw her.. well the little rotter buggered off with her and wouldn’t come back to me.

He was SO happy to see her, his tail was going that fast I thought he was going to fly. And it took me ages to get him to come back.. then he cried when we walked away.

After that I’ve never had another concern 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
