Feeling like a mean Mum

Like most of the UK we have had some very high temperatures these last couple of weeks , it rose to 29 degrees on Friday . The forecast for today was for it to be much cooler , Great thought I , the dogs can have a proper walk and not just a dash to the river . However , whilst it was cooler it was still 26 degrees , so once again it was a short walk . I tend to wait until early evening when the garden is in full shade , then take them out to play games for half an hour . I feel so mean , they havent had a good hours walk in ages but I guess its for their own good, but the eyes, oh the eyes  Reuben has become very adept at that pleading look :sun:

We haven't had anything like those temperatures in Hampshire or Scotland so luckily we haven't had to take short walks. When it is high temperatures it's either very early or very late evening for us. It's definitely for their own good so pleading looks don't work! xx

When it’s above 25 here, Axel turns into a lizard and doesn’t want to do anything but soak up the sun. He doesn’t ask for walks or to play, just asks to soak in the sun, then I get him inside to cool off, and repeat. He whines and whines to be able to sun tan ☀ 🐶

It is really difficult isn’t it! We’ve been going out around 9am when it’s still under 20 degrees, but go somewhere with lots of water. We then go out again around 8/9pm when it’s cooler and more shaded.

26 sounds positively chilly! It always fascinates me how people in different climates feel about different temperatures. And I really don’t think it’s about acclimation, as we can travel from the snow for a weekend in the late 20s and still feel perfectly able to go on long walks. Yesterday’s 6.5 hour walk was in the late 20s!
I’m sure the largest part is the humidity. I’ve just arrived back in Spain where it’s the same sort of temperature as I’ve had today (although obviously it’s night time here now!) but it feels hot to me because it’s unusually humid - 90%, ugh!
Still, I drove through heavy storms through Flix, so hoping the rain will help to finally extinguish the fires.

It is the humidity which has been very high here over the last week or so . When we lived in France, it would get much hotter than it is here right now, but it was a dry heat , which was very different indeed . There is no way I would take my dogs for a long walk in this current heat and humidity , it is far too risky for my liking x

I agree 100% on this. 28 in Spain is completely liveable, 28 in Germany is no fun. Humidity and no breeze. Feels like you're breathing water.

The other thing is home construction. I've yet to be in a home in the UK that is built with air circulation in mind. Germany isn't quite as bad, but not far off. Spanish and Italian houses are built so that you open up everything at night to let the cooler air in, then close it up during the day to keep it cool. On the other hand, you freeze your keister off in most Spanish and Italian places in the winter, so that's the trade off.

As for dog walking, I couldn't take Brogan out after it hit 25 in Spain even if it felt fine to me. That black fur is a real disadvantage!

The next 10 days it is ranging from 6 (brrr) to 18. In the morning and evening you need a coat, scarf and gloves but in the middle of the day you can walk around in a t-shirt if it is nice and sunny. Maxx doesn't like the cold and neither do I

I don't feel too hot in summer until it is well into the 30's but it's all about what you are used to and, as you all said, the humidity

When Steve first moved to Australia he would walk around all winter in short sleeves scoffing at everyone rugged up as he was used to freezing cold winters in NZ; but now, 30 years later, he's as rugged up as the rest of us :cold:

I have to watch W&S as they would run and run whatever the temperature. Willow would lie in the sun all day, given the choice. Squidge shows very obvious signs when it’s too hot, she’s just not built for it. But late 20s with low humidity and a brisk breeze is lovely and refreshing 😁

Oh see, I thought it was just a black dog thing as Carbon goes into "Dios mio, I am going to die" mode at about the same temp as Brogan did. I guess I just happen to have got two heat-adverse boys. Carbon loved laying in the sun in Cornwall...but in 15C or less temps. :D

Chewie likes to lie in the sun when it is 30 degrees. He does it for 5mins, gets hot and comes in to lie on the cool boards, then repeats. Little weirdo. If it is under 20 degrees he just wants to curl up in a ball somewhere warm. What a hedonist.

Cupar and Cassie are 'scottish' dogs, the cold doesn't phase them but when the temperature sits at 20 degrees they're panting, right up until I bring out the lead and then the dying Swan act has gone.
I go to Greek Islands and Spain to guarantee getting at least 26 degrees, I dream of waking up to Blue skies and sunshine.
I'm Scottish but I think my ancestors are Italian or French or Spanish oh anywhere there is heat.
So far this year, we've had 7 warm days this year and it's now July. Oh and for a right moan, I'm looking at nothing but grey skies and I'm having to water the plants.

I’ve never seen Stanley cold. No matter the weather he seems to be completely fine.

He’s also a sun worshipper - will find the tiniest bit of sun to bask in.

The recent hot weather doesn’t seem to have fazed him much at all. It’s been business as usual in terms of walks.
