First season..

Hi guys! Lyla is now 7 months old and I've noticed that she's swollen a bit this afternoon. I've not noticed any blood yet, but aparently they will swell before they bleed? She's been whining at me (even straight after she's been for a 45 min run in the woods!), and she's been cleaning herself a lot more this afternoon..

Lyla is my first puppy (mum obviously has a girl but I was at uni when she went through her first season).. Does this sound like she's coming into heat?

Another question - we are meant to be having 2 friends for dinner tomorrow night, and they have an intact male who is around 4 months old.. As far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong), she won't be fertile until the bleeding stops, so should be OK seeing an intact male whilst she is bleeding - is this right, or is it best to keep them apart until I am 100% sure she is out of season?

Thank you! ❤

Actually , they can be fertile from the very first day , sorry ! First seasons are often so light that you dont even see any spotting of blood at all , usually the fertile time is from the second week onwards but as always , they vary tremendously and, as she is swollen and clingy , she could well be well into the season with no signs of blood especially if she is cleaning herself . Re the male , it is rare for a male to be fertile at 4 months , he may have the urge but no productive sperm ! I would be inclined to keep them apart as she could well be very ratty with him if he tries to mount her , as I said it would be unusual for a male to be fertile at this age, but not unknown , sorry ! x
