Forum Rules - Please read first!

Every relationship needs rules, even relationships between friends! We have tried to keep ours easy to follow - we want to foster an environment of mutual respect and fun. Rule number 1 sums it up pretty well. So, on with the rules!!

  1. Do not try to upset other people or disrupt the friendly, safe and kind culture we aim to cultivate here.

Personal criticisms, comments about people, politics or religions, and things which would normally be considered libelous have no place in this forum.

There are times when someone says (or writes) something that triggers our “somebody is WRONG on the internet!” button. Try not to rise. If you feel the urge to write something scathing or judgmental, take a deep breath instead and just think before you type. Remember, you can always use the "report button" on the post you are uncomfortable with, (button bottom left of each post..) and let the mod team deal with it instead. Finally, the mod team have the last word, and will quarantine or delete posts if considered necessary.

  2. No promotion of painful methods or equipment. We have an ethos of training through force-free methods and want this to be a sanctuary for like-minded people. We also wholeheartedly welcome people who are interested in changing over to more rewards-based methods of training. We want to have those discussions of how we can get the same results by using kinder methods. We know it can be hard for people on either side to get their heads around the other, but let’s start from a place of mutual respect. No-one here wants to hurt their dogs. Everyone here loves their dogs. We’re not going to change any opinions by telling people they are “bad” for following the advice of others in their community. That said, we don’t allow the recommendation of devices such as prong collars, shock collars, or actions such as physically reprimanding your dog, or scaring them into compliance. Instead, let’s come together to discuss ways to achieve the same - or better! -results without the reliance on those tools.

  3. Promotion of causes. Please approach one of the moderator team before posting up about any causes, be that appeals for donations, sponsorship, signatures or participation in a survey. Sometimes we’ll say yes. Sometimes we’ll say no. It will depend on who you are, how much of an active member of the community you are, what the cause is and how many other causes have been promoted recently. We don’t want to inundate our members with pleas for help, so we’ll likely keep this to one every few months at the most.

  4. Advertising. Please approach one of the moderator team before advertising your product, website or venture. As with promotion of causes, our answer will depend very much on who you are and what it is you’re trying to advertise. People may not join the forum specifically to advertise. You must be an active member of the "My Labrador Friends" community. Spammers will be banned immediately.
  5. It is recommended that for their health and emotional wellbeing that puppies stay with their mums and breeders until 8 weeks old. You can find guidance HERE from the UK Kennel Club on buying a puppy and questions to ask the breeder
Our forum rules regarding underage puppies is that we encourage potential puppy owners to wait until they are 8 weeks of age before collecting from the breeders. This is to safeguard the health and emotionally well-being of the puppy and is in accordance with Kennel club guidelines.
We kindly ask members to refrain from posting their puppy until they are 8 weeks old.
We strongly recommend the puppy is taken to the vet as soon as possible for appropriate care if circumstances mean it was not possible to collect the puppy at the recommended age.

MLF's obligation to you.

I wanted to update this just to have a quick word about our obligation to you and your content. You might have heard a lot about GDRP, especially if you are in Europe, which gives people a lot more control over their personal data. However, GDPR does not apply to MLF because we are not an economic enterprise (Does the GDPR apply to me?).

To fall within the remit of the GDPR, the processing has to be part of an “enterprise”. Article 4(18) of the Regulation defines this as any legal entity that’s engaged in economic activity.

That said, we do cherish our members and respect the wishes of everyone in our community, so legal responsibility aside, we feel it's only fair that if there is any personal content you wish to be removed, and it is reasonable for us to do so (bearing in mind we are all volunteers), then we will of course do what we can to honour your request. It is unlikely we will simply blanket-remove all posts from any member, because that ruins the flow of conversation, but we will do what we reasonably can to help. From your side, if there is something you wish to remove, if you can point us to the post(s) in question and offer an edited version where it makes sense to do so, that will make it a lot easier for us and expedite the process. If you want a copy of all the posts you have made, in spreadsheet form, this can be arranged.
