Fungie, Ireland’s Missing Dolphin, ‘Goes With the Tide’

Sad to read today in the NY Times that Fungie, Dingle's famous dolphin, has been missing for two weeks now. In nearly 40 years, he's never been gone for more than a couple days, so two weeks likely means that he has disappeared into the sunset at the end of a long and beloved life. Dingle is one of my favourite places in the world and walking in the muddy cow fields next to the harbour in the evening - and invariably seeing Fungie's dorsal fin slicing through the water - was part of my Dingle tradition.

Where ever you are Fungie, I hope you have lots of fish, clear water, dolphin friends and peace - thank you for the wonderful memories.

We went on. Fungie cruise in Dingle but didn’t see Fungie :( He will be missed.
Oh, that's rare that you don't (didn't) see him. The first time I went to Dingle, I thought it was a bunch of hooey, that you probably had to go on the cruise and MAYBE 1/10 times you'd see him. But the very first time I walked around the harbour I saw him and then every time after that. Sometimes it was just a glimpse of dorsal fin, but if the cruises were going, he'd pretty much just circle the boats, so it was easy to spot him. My friend Cian went out in his kayak early one morning and joked "I'm going to kayak with Fungie" - both of us thinking it WAS a joke and that he'd just see him from a distance - but no, he really did end up kayaking with Fungie. ❤
