I have been working hard with retrieving , making it all good fun with lots of praise and slowly , Reubs has become more and more interested , becoming quite passionate about his tennis balls . It is my own personal view that it is no use trying to take things too seriously when they are still pups , let them be pups and start slowly when they reach adolescence . This afternoon , he made my heart sing , filled me with joy and pride ( could well be a different story tomorrow ! ) We have been working on a few gundog cues , the ones I always employed with Sam , plus visual ones as well as verbal . We walked on a forest trail, he carrying his ball which he would drop when he scented something interesting and then walk on with me , forgetting the ball . I sent him back , the ball now well out of sight but back he went, looked around and started to come to me , I sent him back again , further back until he was almost out of sight . Flying round the corner he came , ball in mouth and looking so pleased with himself as he dropped it by my feet . Much praise in silly voice ensued along with a dried fish , rinse and repeat ! He had a blast , took it all very seriously indeed but loving every second . We have no great finesse , no doubt the pros would wring their hands but it was so lovely for both us , whilst Nelly pottered around doing her own thing . Its like Reuben has suddenly realised his purpose in life so we will continue , in our own way x
