Great visit at new vet!

We had Ella's vaccinations done this morning at our new vet. He had us in the room for ages, just chatting and playing with Ella until she was relaxed and comfortable. Then she let him do a full examination! She was a star and he was so kind and calm with her. The only small hiccup was that she tucked her bum away when when we went to check her temperature so he stopped, gave her a treat and some space. He said it was better to keep the visit happy than to get her temp :)

What's even better is that he was so thorough and great at explaining everything.

Woo hoo! Great vet visit!

Cost a fortune though ?

I'm glad that you're happy with the change, but it's never nice to hear about really expensive visits. I do know that some vets are out to get as much money per visit as possible. I was getting vet recommendations from my equine vet friend who said "yeah, don't go to [this guy]. He told me that animals don't come through his door without being charged at least $200". He was an excellent vet apparently, but he was also out to get as much money as possible out of his clients. Bummer, huh.

Glad the new vet was so nice. It does make a huge difference when our dogs are comfortable with them. The fact that he didn’t take her temperature to ensure she was happy is fantastic ?

I don't actually know if it was OTT expensive as we did the heartworm vaccination this year for the first time (we usually give it in the monthly wormer). Core vaccinations plus kennel cough plus heartworm vaccination and a check up was $270. Roughly £155.

I'd be interested to know how that compares to other countries.

JESUS WEPT EMILY.

Xena had her annual health check on Monday. KC vaccine. Endogard. Nails clipped. $82. That's....$75AUD. £42. Maybe that's standard across practices but yikes, was he planning on taking her temperature with a solid gold thermometer?

NZ needs skilled migrants, fyi.

Eeek! In Andorra, pay just over €100 total for the three Labs to have their yearly vaccines, including rabies. We don't use the heartworm vaccine, but when I have used the tablet from the vet it's €13 including the appointment. The same for vet check and tapeworm here in Spain before travelling to the UK; all three dogs got weighed, had their eyes, ears and hearts checked and their paperwork filled in and it was under €50 total.

I've asked a couple of friends here in Aus and it seems that we're just an expensive country ?

A lot of things here are expensive, even online items (such as a song from iTunes - costs more than most places in the world).

To be fair, our prices are so cheap because insurance is so rare - insurance does seem to knock up the cost of veterinary care. My dogs aren't insured because there is only one company who has recently started to offer insurance for Andorran residents, and they are extortionate for very limited cover. So we have to pay for all our vet bills, which is bad, but it's far cheaper than many places, which is good. Many vets have also introduced payment plans in recent years, so that people don't feel they can't afford necessary medical care for their pets.

I've just paid £46 for Coco's annual vaccine & health check. All she did for the health check was eyes, ears, teeth, listened to his chest and had a good feel all over. I did the weighing before we went in. If I remember correctly, the Kennel Cough vacc was around £30 - we only had it once when he had to spend a couple of nights in kennels when he was new.
