Grooming

Yesterday I took Red to the Groomers as she is shedding big time. I’ve never done it before - although she has had a groom before leaving the kennels after a stay. I took her to where Molly goes and the lady there is so kind and thoughtful. You fill in a form before you go which asks lots of questions so she had a good idea what Red is like. Afterwards on collection, you are given lots of feedback - a card showing exactly what the groomer has done and how Red was, as well as verbal feedback.

It was a very positive experience and Red looks lovely - last evening I took her for a walk and she sat in the black ashes from the field fire we had back in July (not done that before!). Then this morning we got soaking wet and muddy from the heavy rain. However she has come up clean after a good wipe and looks great again.

I’ll take her again in the Spring when she starts shedding again. For the time being, I’ll enjoy not frantically vacuuming 😊

Same here. Tatze is 13 and I brush her every day. Still I can't keep up - so we go to the groomer four times a year.

We went yesterday. Our groomer only takes one dog at a time, she only has one table . When I went to pick Tatze up she was fast asleep with her head on the groomer's knee!

Look at this  :wasntme:

Tatze and Red look very smart. What an amazing amount of fur came off Tatze, enough to knit another dog! Flicka moults all the time and although her coat looks Lab like, I think it is more a spaniel coat, so no woolly undercoat. Otherwise seeing what the groomer has done, I would have Flicka there as quickly as possible!

Yes this groomer only has one dog at a time. She said the dogs often fall asleep after their groom. She also has a huge garden and unlike today, the weather was lovely yesterday so she takes them in the garden before and after groom.

That’s an enormous amount of fur off Tatze. I’d love to have seen how much fur she got off Red - I should have asked, will next time.

It's grooming for Joy every day at this time of year, also in the Spring. She's always most obliging with it (possibly because BISKITS are involved?) but the problem is that she tends to lie down on her back to let me do it and of course her tummy is the bit that sheds least! We manage pretty well like that though, along with a daily wizz round with the vacuum.

I daily vacuum the dining room as we spend most time in there, it looks immaculate, then I have one of those tools you can 'scrape' the carpet with and the amount of hair gathered, despite the vacuuming, is amazing!

Red looks great, if maybe a little unimpressed by the process. 😉

I’ve only given Carbón two baths EVER and in both cases he smelled worse after than before. And this is from someone who bathed my Rotties weekly. Carbón does best with a good dunk in seawater but he never really needs it smell-wise, just the salt water makes his coat lovely and soft.

So far he’s not moulting but I’m dreading it. I always try to leave my holiday lets without a trace of fur but it’s tough going November - December.

I used a shedding blade in my Rotties but Carbón hated it. Barring professional grooming, any advice on a gentler tool that really strips them out?

Yes not the best photo 😊. She is still looking great two days later - for now it has made a huge difference.

Yes, I’ve always understood that Labs don’t need bathing so I never have (Sky had a bath after she’d rolled in fox poo 🦊💩).

I used a shedding blade
I use a furminator. I’ve tried lots of things - they have all helped to a degree

I also use a furminator, it's the best brush I've found by far.

Snowie hated any brush that was metal or had sharp tines. I think it hurt his skin. He had very sensitive skin. Perhaps Carbon, too? Which is why he doesn’t like the brush?

I used a rubber mitt on Snowie. It had “bristles” (very short rubber knobby things), but I think the fur just stuck to the rubber. On occasion, I used the furminator, but I just glided it over him so as not to dare touch his skin. Also a good rub with a towel took a lot of fur off.

Yes, agreed. Carbón seems very sensitive when it comes to his skin. I’m willing to give a furminator a try (it’s been in my Amazon cart for ages) but keep hesitating as it looks like a shedding blade, just with a different handle. He HATED the shedding blade, where nearly all my other dogs and fosters loved the thing. So….?

What I use now that he loves is one of my old Wet Brushes, which is super soft. It gets gobs of fur out when he’s moulting but takes forever and never really makes a massive dent, ie you can run your hand over him after 30 mins of using the brush and still get a handful of loose fur.

But a furminator-type brush is worth a try. If he hates it, there’s always someone around with a shedding dog who wouldn’t mind it gifted second hand!

I used an undercoat rake on Lilly, and Sully has the same. No blades. Seems to get more hair out than slicker style brushes and tolerated quite well.

Undercoat rake

Can't get that link to work 😩
Groom professional undercoat rake. Its got a blue handle and only £6.99

PS, think I fixed it

The furminator is the only thing that seems to work for Chewie so it's lucky that he likes it and when he sees it he prances outside to the "brushing spot" then waits by the treat cupboard for his fishie.

We find that deshedding rakes and slickers don't really shift any hair, especially on his haunches. He also gets the brown patches when he has lots of loose undercoat.

He had a trip to the groomer last week. We tried a new groomer and she was lovely. He made himself right at home- when I went to pick him up he was in the staffroom testing the sofa after he ate her homemade pumpkin biscuits. 😮
