Harley’s nail

Update:
This weekend has been a nightmare. I ended up bandaging her paw as she would not stop licking it 😢. We went to the vets this afternoon for it to be checked and the nail has split kore. She’s going in tomorrow morning for a minor op to remove the nail. She is being dropped off at 9am and they said I can collect her around 2pm. They aren’t going to cove the paw as they said it will heal better without it, but she will have a big collar on to stop her licking it. It should start healing in a few days and the pain should ease within a few days too.
I know it’s only a minor procedure, but I’m really worried it will set us back. I know it’s the best thing as it clearly isn’t healing, but my heart is breaking for her because I know she will be so stressed. My OH is away at the minute, but has managed to arranged to come home tomorrow night because I’m really worried about the impact it will have on her. I’m might be worrying and she might be fine, but......you all know what I mean x

Oh Naya of course you're worried, we ALL get it. As long as Harley is out of pain that's the main thing. The vets can be such a stressful place for some dogs but all you and your OH can do is make sure Harley is as calm as you can possibly manage. She will be home safely with you before you know it and you can cuddle up on the sofa and spoil her. Try not to be over anxious or Harley will pick up on it. Thinking about you all. Lots of xxxxx and :hug::hug: to you and Harley xxxx

The worst limp I have ever seen Monty with was with a split, and then infected nail. I know it's horrible for you, but this time tomorrow it will all be over and she can be on the mend xx

I'm just catching up on this now and wanted to send lots of hugs and good wishes for Harley's procedure tomorrow.

She - and you - have sure had a lot of stuff going on in the last few months. Hopefully somehow it won't be as traumatic for her as you are fearing and getting rid of the pain will be a huge relief.

I bet she’ll try and lick the foot less once the nail is gone - it’s the split that is so deeply uncomfortable. Good luck Naya, you’ll get through this and Harley will be back on form before you know it.

My poor old boy Doug endured years of this. The only thing you can do is put on the plastic collar keep them as pain free as possible and make sure they don't lick ever. When you are not with her her cone must be on. If you want her cone free you must be with her. It's horrible hard and soul destroying but managing them totally is the only way.
I had to do the same me when Rory had his 2 foot surgeries. You have to forget about being human and manage the situation. Hard but the only way. They heal quicker and it's over quicker. Be calm encouraging and kind but the cone stays on.

I know not easy when they go for the day, but like others have said she will feel better once out and back ti normal in no time.

Ruffwear are supposed to be good. I looked at those for Vanilla, but did not order them in the end as she was still growing. But I like that they stay on with the velcro

Every one recommend ruff wear boots and they are great. They really helped with Rory. I also got some kids socks and put one of the paws rubber foot protectors over the top it is comfortable and water proof. A lot of the time I kept them naked in doors as it was dry. I find not having anything on the injury and keeping it clean and dry works well. Also having a bandage on is attractive for chewing and licking habits to get started and they must not lick.
I know it's hard we all love our dogs but I find for me forgetting about how I feel gets me through this kind of thing. She will be so much better when the nail is gone.
Doug lost every nail on his feet even the dew claws. It was horrible watching the nails destroy themselves,. He was in such terrible pain for the internal pressure and infection it was a terrible time.

The plan is for her to have a collar on at home with nothing on her paw, but when she’s goes into the garden or for a walk I need it protected so want to use a boot. I agree re bandages, they don’t help much. I will look at the ruffwear ones now 😀

Child's sock and a pawz would be ideal for this. It's soft so won't rub as much as the boots for the first few days.

Usually when arriving at the vet, a dog is given a small sedative which will relax the dog and take away any distress. Dogs are amazingly forgiving, my one dog when castrated, was terribly bruised and yet he greeted the vet happily when he happened to meet her when we were out on a walk.

When my old dog had to have stitches in his paw, I had to dress it and keep it dry. Out vet gave me an old drip bag which I put on when he went out side for a wee. I put a thread around the top of the bag, it worked great.
I hope all goes well for you both tomorrow
