Product Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet id Digestive Care

Received an email from Fetch this morning about the wet food I put in Red’s kongs. On the last order I made (48 cans) there are concerns about potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D. They tell you what symptoms to look out for - vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss and to see your vet! They are going to refund my money. I have 18 cans left and also 8 frozen kongs so I have been busy thawing out the kongs and disposing of their contents. I quickly filled a Kong with Red’s kibble and soaked that and froze it. It wasn’t completely frozen when it was her early evening Kong time - she looked rather confused at what I was giving her.

So tomorrow I am off to the pet shop to buy some wet food with turkey in it. Reckon it’s time to try something new - I have been playing it safe with her as she has had so many tummy upsets in the past but generally been very good for a while now.

I didn't realize the recall went beyond North America. The news here has been reporting that all the contaminated cans were only in the USA. That's the food Quinn was on post-surgery from the vet, but luckily we have no cans left

Why not cook your own? I’m always far more comfortable knowing exactly what Snowie eats. I do not trust processed foods, especially dog food. Eaten as a treat now and then, okay. But not for every meal.

Ours have to have a wet food to top their kibble (OH's wish). Meg(an) Sparkle has a sensitive tum (we're currently working out what she can't eat - beef has been proven a no-no, she's has a pork (sausage) challenge tonight). She has Fishmongers Finest from Pets at Home it's just fish & potato (& minerals & seaweed). It' very smelly and doesn't look nice but she LOVES it, really loves it.

Time unfortunately - two dogs = 6 kongs a day. I have a 30 minute window every morning to get everything ready for the dogs - making kongs, weighing out their meals and all things dog related.
I just made my dogs’ food for the next two weeks this evening. Active time is about five minutes chopping, the rest (about 45 mins) is just passive cooking with a stir every 15 mins. I then split it into containers and refrigerate and freeze. I have a million Kongs I stuff and freeze together which last a couple of days for the four dogs.
I’m not saying you should do it, just that it doesn’t take all that much time if you choose to. Just do it in bulk and it takes so much less time overall :)

Yes I could - I just worry about upsetting her tum but I will aim to be doing it all myself - I know it makes sense.
I use wet food for kongs a lot, but with all the upset the last few months, one of the first things we were allowed to give was chicken mince...so now I cook that and mix it with cooked sweet potato or pumpkin - good for tummy, cheaper than cans! One batch makes 6-8 kongs....I usually keep some in the fridge to reload kongs as they are eaten too.

My OH visited the Forthglade factory (based near us) as part of his job, and said it was really suprising how non-bleurgh it was :) The chap who runs it is a massive dog enthusiast with dogs of his own, and wanted to make decent fodder his dogs would enjoy :dug:
Of course, this means I now buy Forthglade for Kipper's kongs, but am planning to batch cook a la @snowbunny once I've got my life sorted out...
