Holly at the vet again

I sometimes despair about Hollys scavenging.

Today we went for a quiet walk along the Wye from Little Doward car park. It was a nice walk, with a little swim in the river as a highlight. On the way back to the car she found a deer bone. She realised that I would take it off her, so she shot off into the woods with it. It was a rocky area so it was not easy to get to her, and by the time I arrived she had demolished half of it.

When we got back to the car she wouldn’t jump into the tailgate, so I lifted her in. When we got home she was limping, presumably because of her mad dash away with the bone.

After lunch she couldn’t stand up. Mid afternoon I rang the vet, and when Holly eventually stood up she had peed herself.

Shes now on pain killers for her knee, paraffin gel to try to ease any bone splinters through her digestive system. We’ve got to watch out in case bits of bone cause a blockage or bleeding. We have to carry her out to the garden as she can’t manage the step. There will be no walks for several days until she stops limping, then it’s gentle walks only for a while.

All for a bit of deer bone. Bloody dog!

Oh gosh, that's a scare! And I always think of Holly as being such a good girl. Horrible that she's suffering so badly from it though, sounds painful. Hopefully she can naturally break down the raw bone without causing any issues.

Poor Holly! She still is a GoodGirl though! Hope she feels better soon and no harm comes from the deer bone. They do put us through worries though, don't they?

Poor Holly she does sound poorly. If mine find a bone while out, rabbit or something else, I just let them eat it, because if I chase after them then they gobble it down, better to leave them alone to chew it thoroughly. Though I guess a deer bone is too big to let them chew that down. I feel quite worried about Holly as she is so low.

Oh no, that's scary! Willow ate half a baby deer the other day... not her finest hour. But between her and the brown thing, they have chomped their way though more than their combined bodyweight in dead animal, and nothing untoward has happened, other than the odd explosion from one end or t'other.
Hopefully Holly just needs to get it passed, then it will be past.

I am so sorry Phil, that’s is really worrying.

Hope you don’t have too much of a difficult night. I would be very anxious about Holly not wanting to lift her head up, she is such a stoic girl.

Will be thinking of you and Holly tonight.

We’re keeping her downstairs for a few nights until her knee is better. She’s used to sleeping in our room, so I’m stopping down with her tonight to keep her company.
