I sometimes despair about Hollys scavenging.
Today we went for a quiet walk along the Wye from Little Doward car park. It was a nice walk, with a little swim in the river as a highlight. On the way back to the car she found a deer bone. She realised that I would take it off her, so she shot off into the woods with it. It was a rocky area so it was not easy to get to her, and by the time I arrived she had demolished half of it.
When we got back to the car she wouldn’t jump into the tailgate, so I lifted her in. When we got home she was limping, presumably because of her mad dash away with the bone.
After lunch she couldn’t stand up. Mid afternoon I rang the vet, and when Holly eventually stood up she had peed herself.
Shes now on pain killers for her knee, paraffin gel to try to ease any bone splinters through her digestive system. We’ve got to watch out in case bits of bone cause a blockage or bleeding. We have to carry her out to the garden as she can’t manage the step. There will be no walks for several days until she stops limping, then it’s gentle walks only for a while.
All for a bit of deer bone. Bloody dog!
