Holly's friends will know her as a gentle soul with a love of all-day country walks and muddy wallows, founding member of the SW pack, and as the author of two dog-walking books. It looks like her walking career is over.
During the hot weather she was panting on her early morning walks. We just put it down to the weather and kept her in the shade and well hydrated. As temperatures returned to normal she carried on panting, and started to breathe more rapidly when at rest. A couple of days later she started drinking a lot of water. That night she was restless and confused and widdled on the bedroom carpet. We took her straight to the vet.
After three vet visits and various scans its clear that she has a serious heart problem. Her last vet visit had her in excellent health so the damage has occured over a matter of weeks. We're still not clear about the cause, the extent of the damage to her heart, and the long-term prognosis. The current thought is that she has infection in her heart valves so she's on strong antibiotics for that. She's also on two other drugs to try and reduce her heart rate and improve its pumping as it has enlarged. Today's visit to the vet showed that her temperature is back to normal, but no change in her overall condition.
The current aim is to stabilise her health so we can assess what happens next. She gets bored during the day and wants to play, but she quickly out of breath and lies down. We're taking her for slow 15 minute walks around the estate to raise her spirits. She enjoys these short walks but its about all she can manage at the moment. Holly is being her usual stoic self but we're in shock at the speed at which this has happened.

Wow, that's a shock for all of you. I am sorry this has galloped up from nowhere. It sounds like you've caught it relatively quickly, and Holly won't have been struggling for long. Hopefully she'll be feeling more stable very soon and you'll have a clearer idea where to go from there.

Maybe some gentle sniffing games (like laying short scent trails, or kibble paths at different heights and on different surfaces in a room or outside) or snuffle/lick mats might give Holly some interest alongside keeping the activity very low tempo. It must feel a bit brutal to have to keep her so quiet, but also important at the moment x

We’ve been playing gentle games of seek in the garden to keep her amused. Chatting with the vet he seemed happy for her to take short car journeys as she’s a good traveller. Tomorrow we’re going to try a 15 minute very easy walk in the woods to give her a change.

I'm so sorry to read about Holly, that most prolific of walkers. Hopefully with the right medication, she can again take longer walks, if maybe not so long as before. I know it's early days yet and you will find lots of solutions to keep her engaged and happy, maybe even a sort of bike trailer/push cart for her so she can still go with you without so much effort? I was going to get one for Brogan and was looking at options - lots of good ones made specifically for dogs, even for off-road.

Hugs to you and a gentle pat to lovely Miss Holly. ❤

Poor Holly, and what a dreadful shock for you and Ruth. I like the idea of a trailer of some sort as @Emily_Babbelhund suggested Or gentle car journeys for a change of scenery.. Just take things easy. I am not sure about too much sniffy stuff, only because it can raise the respiration rate very quickly? But honestly not sure if that affect Hollys condition in any way.

So sorry to hear about Holly, hopefully things will stabilise and you can make a plan for the future. Very frightening to happen so quickly, and making it more difficult to adapt.
:hug::hug: For you all.

I am so sorry, it is a shock when these things happen suddenly and change our lives. I so hope that there is medication that can help and if it is am infection it responds quickly to the antibiotics, maybe they need to change the AB?

I see your point that playing seek might get her excited. TBH we're struggling to keep her mind active without doing anything physical and we're open to ideas for stress-free ways of entertaining her.
I think the short sniffy walks in the woods might be the best we can give her for now.
I don't think the trailer would go down well. Holly is a creature of habit and believes that the tailgate is her only entrance to the car. She won't get on the back seat without a lot of encouragment. Getting her into a trailer could be extremely stressful for her as it's a big change.

The AB seems to have brought her temperature down to normal over the last few days so they seem to be effective. She's staying on it to ensure that we kill off whatever is in her system.
The big issue is to work out what damage has been done, stabilise it, and work out what the long term effects are.
We're happy with the vet and have been with him for about 6 years. He has a good reputation among other dog owners in the area, and is also a Lab owner.

So, so sorry to hear this about your lovely Holly. I do hope that the infection clears up soon and that the long term effects aren't too restrictive for her. It sounds like she's in good hands with your vet though and of course she will receive the very best of care from both of you.

I am really feeling for you and Ruth (and Holly of course). You are such amazing dog parents and I know you will always do what is best for her. Sounds like the hot weather could have triggered it 😢
I know it’s not possible at the minute, but if she is up to a short visit at some stage from me and Harley, please do let me know.
Thanks Naya. When things are stable I’m sure she’d like to see you and Harley again.
We have no idea what triggered it. The main suspect is that she ingested something in one of her muddy wallows
