I’m so sorry to hear this, Phil. I know you will give her the best life she can have, just as you have so far. But it’s really hard to have this happen.
So sorry to hear that Holly isn't doing so well, it really is the news nobody wants to hear. It is good that she is not in pain though. It seems a good plan to let her dictate the length of her walks and rests if she wants them.
Ah no, I'm so sorry; it's so hard to see the deterioration in our beloved dogs as they get older. I know you will do everything possible to make life easy, comfortable and enjoyable for Holly. Big hugs to all of you, and I hope tomorrow is a better day.
So sorry to hear this, Phil.
Holly is the luckiest of pups to have you and Ruth to make every day for her the best it can be. No pain, and no fear - that is a good combination that is perhaps the best that any of us could ever wish for. May she have as many days as possible just like that, with as many sniffs and treats as she can fit in.
All our love for this chapter, hard and sad though it is.
We tried her out on a longer walk today. We started at the Arboretum in the Forest of Dean and did a loop through the woods at her pace on paths she knows and enjoys. The route gave us lots of 'cut off' points if she was tiring.
She was happy to plod along and sniff at things, even splash in the occasional puddle. She got out of breath once so we stopped and let her rest until she was ready to carry on. After almost an hour she was still enjoying herself but we decided she' had enough by then. We only covered a mile but I think she enjoyed it.
She's been rather flat this afternoon but has started to perk up in the last hour.
The saga continues….
Last Thursday we decreased the Lanoxin as blood tests had shown it was at too high a level. We increased the Vetmedin to try and strengthen her heart. Over the weekend her breathing rate at rest has slowly increased from 30 per min to 48. She’s also resumed the nocturnal restlessness. Two steps back.
We called the vet today for advice and he tacked her on to the end of his appointments list. The worry is that the infection might be coming back after only 4 weeks on antibiotics, so Holly is back on the ABs. If theres no improvement by Wed he’s going to try and get her a specialist appointment, possibly as early as Friday.
Meanwhile Holly continues to have short sniffy walks every morning. She clearly wants to do more than 30 minutes and is getting bored and a little depressed. We’ve been entertaining her as best we can, and have made a couple of banana Kongs for her for later in the week. This last few weeks has been a huge change to her routine.
I’m so sorry for Holly and you both! It’s such a worry when they are getting old and having problems like this! I hope that the vet specialist can be of help for Holly and get her the right medicine!
