How long are your walks?

Rourke gets 20 mins off lead in morning and a chance to sniff out tennis balls and is little snipe dummy. He also sets up his own retrieving as he isn't supposed to be doing that re his arthritis and tendonitis, he puts down the tennis ball when I am not looking, striding ahead, then comes and runs up to me with the expression 'go on, send me' so I say 'go back' and off he goes to retrieve the ball :). In the afternoon we have an hour plus walking in the fields and woods with his Greyhound friend, where he is often quite a distance from me. I am surprised at how long (in time) some of you walk the dogs, I find it does tie up the day, but I enjoy it.

We are not getting enough walking at the moment and it’s making me grumpy. They get 30-40 mins in the morning for a quick empty, then we’re doing an hour or so in the evening. I would rather be doing at the very least two hours in the evening but work is rammed. I’m hoping that in March it will settle down and I can enjoy my longer mountain hikes again. I want to get out on touring skis too... if we still have snow then!

Harley gets on average 1-1.5 hours late morning with either my dog walker or myself everyday. On a weekend it’s usually more like 2 hours. This is all off lead and in various locations (woods, fields, by the river). If she’s with my dog walker she plays a fair bit with the other dogs, if it’s just me she stays close and we play lots of games. In the evening she gets a 20-40 min on lead around the block with me or my OH. This is a very sniffy chilled walk. We vary the length depending on if she has been limping.
Occasionally she doesn’t want to go out on an evening so we play games in our garden instead.

It varies here too, depending on time of year and weather.

At the moment our routine is:
Mornings:
Mon, Wed, Thurs - 45-60 mins off lead sniffing about with a friend in the park, not much running
Tues - day care
Fri - a good hour and run about in a different park with other friends, off lead
Sat - 1hr 30mins around a different park off lead
Sun - hopefully an hour or so meeting friends and roaring about like a mad thing, if no friends about then a leisurely woodland walk

Evenings:
Mon, Wed, Fri - on lead trot around the streets for 45mins or less if bad weather
Tues - flaked out from day care but go to Grannys for an hour, very exciting (apparently)
Thurs, Sat - leave work early so an hour around the park off lead
Sun - same as Sunday morning

Occasionally we go out midday to the bank in town or just a walk around the streets for half an hour.
When it is lighter when I get home from work we will go off lead in the fields and park again instead of round the streets - can't come soon enough!

We’re similar to you @M.F.

I work at home most Mondays and Fridays, and we do one morning walk for around 1 hr, then an afternoon walk of around 30-45 mins. Tuesday to Thursday Kipper’s at work with my husband and they tend to have a ~45 min lunchtime walk and a couple of smaller walks morning and afternoon. At weekends we aim for longer 1.5 - 2 hr walks in the morning and are planning to lengthen these, plus a shorter ~45 mins in the afternoon. Some evenings we do an on-lead sniff around the village, and as it gets lighter we’ll do longer evening walks.

On a related note, I'm wondering how many of you can start your "everyday" walks from your front door, or how far you have to drive to get there?

Our short walks are all straight from home, and if I drive to a longer one, it's normally about a ten to fifteen minute drive to get to an array of other locations.

When I stay with my sister, the closest walking place is about a ten minute drive, which isn't far, but to do that twice a day means you're driving for forty minutes!

I'm lucky in that I have a choice of everyday walks from our door. Joy really likes it when we get into a car and drive somewhere for a walk though, infact she has been known to attempt to get into total strangers' cars if they open the boot as we're walking past!

We are lucky that we live on a (very steep) hill. 5 mins walk down to the beach. 5 mins walk up to the mountain. But I do drive 5 mins to a favorite mountain walk. Or 7 mins to another beach. Or 20 mins to the forest. I get bored doing the same walk from my door every day. I assume Snowie feels the same because he gets totally excited when we go somewhere new. But it is WONDERFUL that we can just walk out the door to a lovely walk. I feel very, very privileged.

The out of door walks are mostly in our neighborhood. I start with an off lead walk of 20 minutes. Then a 10 min walk or again the same 20 minutes, depending the time I have and if I feel okay. Afternoon again. Late evening my oh will walk him.
In the weekends we are in the woods and make long walks of 2 hours, we can make them out of our doorstep or drive a little if we want change of scenery.
In our case at weekdays it is more often rather then long walks. I am very happy that I can walk Finn again. There have been a time I was in a wheelchair, not able to walk long. Finn and before that Euan too went with a dog walker 3 times a week, so that they got enough excersise.

I'm lucky too, all our walks are straight out of our front door. Hence Cassie's very poor loose leading walking, very little practice as a puppy!

Every couple of weeks I'll pop her in the car for a different walk, varies from 10 minutes to 30 mins. Or 1 hour or so for an SW walk :)

I generally drive, and though I’d prefer not to it gives us a lot more scope. Most of our walks are 5-15 mins drive away so an extra 30-60 mins a day. Extra walking time during the week isn’t an option because work |( so it means we get better, more varied walks than if we went from the doorstep. Plus lead walking is still a work in progress :wasntme: and all walks from the doorstep are a lot of busy roadwork, so driving ticks many boxes.

We can walk to the park, which is excellent, from the front door. I prefer to drive to the woods, the river, the lake or a reservoir. We have lots of lovely choices here - we are very lucky.

Echo’s free runs are half an hour as he’s only six months old. Tatze‘s are an hour and a half - Mr Boogs does them. I take both together on Saturdays while he has a lie in - and that walk is 30 minutes.

Echo has lots of training walks in shops, shopping centres etc too. They are usually about 40 minutes but include queuing, cafe time, bus rides etc etc.

Then, late afternoon, I do a half hour litter picking walk/jog with Tatze.

:)

I dont driving any more so I have to walk everywhere. To get Rory to a place where he can run and play like flamboyant fool he is takes 20 mins of lead walking to park A park B is 30 mins both have woods streams and are relatively quiet. Park A is busier. I have 2 tiny parks within 10 mins of home. They are good for a 2nd lead walk for Rory and for training fun and off lead work for Iver. I do get taxis into the country and then walk home.

Our walk is from the house - on lead along the road that leads to the next village. Part way along is the entrance to the wood that leads down to the dyke. Off lead then until back near the road. I’d hate to have to use the car for walks even though it would give a greater choice. Red is a creature of habit - she seems perfectly happy walking the same routes. Yesterday she tried to pull to go on the wood/dyke/fields walk but the wind and rain were too bad - we stuck to a trot around the village

We can walk through the housing estate for about 5 minutes before we get to the cliffs/countryside where Molly can go off-lead. However we do drive most days - a two minute drive gets us to the beach, a five minute drive gets us to the edge of the South Downs or riverside walks and sometimes we drive for 15 - 20 minutes to go to a forest, other parts of the Downs or a different river.

We can and do walk from home but, as we're bin the suburbs, it means five or ten mins of pavement walking before we get to a park. We have three or four within that distance and they're either off lead or quiet enough that I will let Ella off lead anyway.

Then we'll drive anywhere between 5mins to an hour for different walks, depending on where we feel like going.

I like to get out to different walks so that it's not just the same old walks from home.
