Hugo at the vet

Ugh I’m panicking right now, Hugo is in the back getting induced vomiting.

I took him to the dog park and right at the gate was a few broken up dog pepperoni sticks, and unfortunately it’s not unusual for poisonous treats to be left at dog parks. So out of precaution I have opted to induce vomiting, as it just seemed to weird how they were piled on top of each other on a little pillar... I was too busy unlatching the gate I didn’t even notice what he was doing, I managed to grab one and sniffed it and broke it in half… it smelled normal.. but just incase I’ve brought him in.

Now my anxiety is stressing over what the vet warned me about regarding induced vomiting, that it can come with risks, worse one being pneumonia. She agreed with me that it is kind of weird how the treats were laying but that I had two options, induce vomiting or monitor him. Well, unfortunately I work and can’t monitor him 24/7 so I opted to induce vomiting. But now I’m worried I’m doing possible harm for no reason. I had to induce vomiting a lot with Axel with no issues so I am hoping all will be fine.

Just found out on Facebook that more of those treats were found but in the small dog park beside the large dog park… that’s too suspicious. I feel relieved I brought him in now pneumonia risks and all.

Oh no! What a worry for you! It does seem strange, the way that the treats were put there, so it sounds like you've gone for the safest option, given that you can't be there to monitor Hugo all the time.
If it's any comfort, Joy had to have induced vomiting a couple of years ago when she sneakily snaffled a plastic wrapper from some raw meat out of the neighbours' recycling before I could get to her and she was absolutely fine afterwards .
I do hope Hugo is OK, please keep us all updated.

Could you test some of the treats to check if they contain poison?

Snowie had to have induced vomiting after eating human poo with drugs in it. He was very weak in the hind quarters after, apparently a side effect of the vomit drugs (can’t remember if it’s the drug that induces vomiting or the one that stops it). That was scary. But he was very happy and drowsy and recovered fine.

Oh dear, these dogs of ours! I would have done exactly the same thing Kelsey, it is too risky to let poison into their system potentially. I'm sure Hugo will bounce with with ease

So sorry you've been put through this Kelsey. Why would someone leave poison? Why would someone leave pepperoni? It's all so horrible. Given the risks, I'd have done the same. Hopefully Hugo is his normal self now and having some lovely treats from Mum xx

I had wondered this too, but unfortunately before my gut feelings started I had thrown the piece I found away in the poop bin. I did look in there before I left but it was way too far down. Turns out the vet wouldn’t have been able to test it anyways so now I’m glad I didn’t dive in to the poop bin

Truly some awful people out there a few people commented on the Facebook post about their dogs almost dying the last few months by this exact same thing. So I am glad I induced vomiting! I bought him a bone to have as a nice treat at a campfire tonight

Update, we are home from the vet. Hugo threw up three big piles, she said it went very smooth so she doesn’t think he aspirated anything. I’ve been given activated charcoal to give him a few times over the next 24 hours just incase, but he should be ok

Bless him, it really saddens me that this is something that even has to be considered when we see our pets snaffle something they shouldn't Hope he feels much better very soon x

Oh poor Hugo, well done to you for your swift decisive action. It’s not pleasant, and there are some risks, but it definitely sounds like you’ve done the right thing with inducing vomiting and it’ll all be a distant dream for Hugo after a day or two. It’s brutal though, isn’t it? We had to do it with Kipper when he was about Hugo’s age after he chewed up an envelope of foxglove seeds - I’ll never forget his wretched little face But all’s well that ends well x

I am despairing of why some people do the things they do - why would you want to harm anyone is beyond me……and it does sound very suspicious - so @Kelsey you did exactly the right thing and I hope Hugo is now ok

Hope all goes well with lovely Hugo. I've heard of people finding poisons here too. So despicable. Chewie was given activated charcoal at the vet once. Apparently he nommed it up.

I mixed it with wet food and he gobbled it all up he gets a full face wash after each dose though. I had black smeared all over my white cupboards, I thought I washed him quick enough but guess not

I don’t think I would have slept a wink or relaxed one minute, so it simply had to be done! Thankfully I didn’t have to watch him throw up at all, that would have been really hard to see. He plowed me down when they brought him back to me though! (That was the vet tech and him coming towards me) They told me that he would be tired the rest of the day from the medications they gave him….. nope…
