Hunter has a Suspected Ruptured ACL

Hunter can't put weight on his left back leg. The vet suspects a torn/ruptured ACL or his meniscus. I have been referred to the ortho to get it checked as the vet thinks surgery will be required. I have to call tomorrow. We promised Hunter no more major operations and my OH says he can't put Hunter through it all again and it will also stress his already bad elbows. This just happened after a little play in a muddy puddle.
I am just devastated. Hunter is stoic as ever and no wiggles from my beautiful idiot today.
I can see his pain in him and the hot weather is not helping. Really don't know how to feel.

How horribly upsetting @Loraseal , or you and poor Hunter. Hold onto that not knowing how to feel, and try not to despair - you don’t know for certain yet what it is, we’re all with you while you wait. Sending you all huge love and support xxxxx

I am so sorry to hear this. It really is so hard. We deliberated a lot over Harley’s surgery because of her arthritis. We weighed up the pros and cons and this really helped us make the decision to do surgery. I know hers was a slightly different surgery and involves metal plates etc, but I can understand completely how you are feeling. I know you will make the right decision for you, your family and Hunter. Big hugs.

I wanted to go to Utrecht as they were brilliant with the seed in his nose. However I have decided to go back to the surgeon in the Hague who operated on his elbows, as he knows how bad all his joints are. Dr Howe is not people friendly and my OH cannot handle his attitude . OH is very clear that he does not want Hunter to have another major op which will cause more pain and stress on his already bad elbows. Appointment is tomorrow at 7:30. We have battled with his joints for over 6 years now and the last 12 months have definitely seen a major decline with more pain meds and less mobility. To top it all he now has a hot spot on his right side near his tail.......
My holiday is next Friday and I really need it.

I’m so sorry. Could you discuss with the vet the option to wear a brace rather than an op? Knee ops in humans have notoriously poor outcomes. I don’t know in dogs.

I asked my vet about the brace and she thinks the brace will not give enough support. I will ask the ortho and I just want to see what my options are. During the stem stell harvest and operation we nearly lost him when the wound got infected. It was horrible what Hunter went through. Our biggest concern is that a new op will put more pressure on his already bad joints and may cause new injuries and extra pain due to compensation.

Is it an option to see your friendly vet in Utrecht as a second opinion, if your unfriendly vet in The Hague doesn’t give you what you (and your husband) need? It’s probably more travel, time off, inconvenience, stress etc but might give you a fuller picture of your options and help you unite in your way forward? I’m sorry this is such a difficult time, it must all feel very heavy right now xxxx
