Itchy dog

I need your help.
Bella is not herself, she is itchy. Lick lick scratch scratch, she’s driving me nuts and I’m sure she’s not happy with it either.
Flea treatment up to date ✔
Has salmon oil every day✔
Has lamb and rice kibble avoiding chicken and grain✔
The only bath she has is a quick hose down after a muddy walk
Her belly and leg pits are dry and scaly,no obvious spots or scabs
I feel there must be some kind of cream or lotion I could use but don’t know what.
Any ideas.

I’d suggest a vet visit. We’re going through similar with Stilton, he’s an itchy boy and it’s become v clear v quickly that this is a tricky thing to get to the bottom of without specialist help. Hopefully it’s a simple cream for Lottie, but the vet is the quickest route.

We experienced this with Ella a number of years ago now. The itching progressed to the point where she couldn't walk from one side of the room to the other without stopping to scratch and nibble.

For Ella, it ended up being allergies and we started treatment with cytopoint injections. She's now had them for years and they have made an incredible amount amount of difference.

I did think maybe be grass or pollen related but it’s a bit early.
It could be that. At the weekend, after her walks, Red was scratching her face in a way I’ve never seen before. She spends a lot of time on her walk sniffing. At the moment the nettles are growing rapidly so I’m conscious of that. The crops in the field are beginning to get quite tall too. My instinct when I saw her scratching was to get a damp cloth and gently wipe her face all over. I’m sure it helped as she stopped scratching. Might be worth doing that with Bella’s belly and legs after her walks

Does Bella have a flea collar? If so it must touch her skin on her neck or it will not protect her.

Something very soothing is an oat rub. You put oats into a cheesecloth bag or stocking. Soak it in hot water till it cools. Then squeeze the bag/stocking to get the oat gel and rub it into the itchy areas working well through the fur and onto the skin. It will be very gooey, but don’t worry. Once it dries, you can rub off the excess and the fur will be soft. Unfortunately I only tried this days before Snowie died. It was amazing, really soothed his itchy back. Excellent for humans, too.

A barrier cream is very effective for prevention. You could use Sudocrem or another baby nappy rash cream. Rub it in every day, particularly before walks, on all bare skin areas. Getting it through the fur might be difficult, so find a thinner cream or dilute it with oil, like coconut or olive oil.

I’ve heard of a shampoo that has a barrier cream built in but have never used it. This would be ideal for furry areas.

I know not a popular opinion, but I am convinced Apoquel and Cytopoint killed Snowie. It affects the skin immunity, and he eventually got a skin infection that was untreatable. Before using Apoquel and Cytopoint, he never got these skin infections. I wish we’d known about the oats and barrier creams and barrier shampoos earlier.

Bella has had a few issues in the past with her skin, usually solved with a dip in the sea. I’d forgotten about this, maybe the cold water helped.
Thank you for these tips, this is just the kind of thing I am looking for.

I’m sorry about Snowie but like to think in some strange way he’s sent a message to try the oats. X

Allergies are funny in that they seem to appear at different stages of life and different seasons. My Rottie boy Brogan had problems with his ears in California as a puppy and then at 8 years old in France but never in Spain once we left France. Then at the ripe old age of 10 (and after previous time spent in Germany) he developed a grass allergy - but only in Germany. So weird. For that we had to resort to a shot at the vet.

Fingers crossed that Snowie’s oatmeal cure does the trick for Bella. 🤞☺

We've noticed a huge reduction in Ella's allergies since we moved from Melbourne to Perth. I'm assuming it's location related rather than age related.

Based on the comments and experiences I’m leaning more towards a grass allergy, she has spent quite a bit of time laying on the lawn charging her batteries in the sun.

I’ve made the oat cream, I think I might have put too much oats into a pop sock as I made a right mess squeezing the gel out. Didn’t waste it though, I rubbed it up my arms😂
I’ve also plastered Bella with it so we will see if it helps. I’ve got plenty left to treat her for a few days.

Well after spreading porridge, sorry Oat Gel all over Bella yesterday she did indeed have a better night. I thought she might start licking if just because she liked the taste but no licking or scratching.
I will repeat the creaming again today and fingers crossed it will help.
How do my arms feel? Well the porridge did rub in eventually. Not sticky at all. Feels ok today, might treat myself to some more after I treat Bella.
