Itchy Oreo

Oreo seems to be very itchy on her face after her walk today. Not sure why.... she was being very good and was pretty much walking at my leg the whole time (apart from when she had a roll). I’ve had a good look and feel at the area she’s scratching and can’t see anything unusual that could be causing it.
Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Perhaps wash her face with a mild shampoo? Or even just rinse her face with plain water. If there’s something on it that’s irritating her, then best to wash it off.

Oreo still seems itchy today (according to mum - I’ve been at work) and very unsettled. If she’s still like this tomorrow I’ll give her Piriton to help with the itching. Wondering if it could be hormonal since she just came into season on Saturday....
Our vet is up at work on Wednesday so I’ll get him to check her over in case I’ve missed something.

Oreo had a very unsettled night (so I had an awful nights sleep:sleepy:) but has been very settled today thank goodness!! She also doesn’t seem to be itching so much, although she does have a couple of scabby bits in her ears from previous scratching - I will keep putting antiseptic spray on them to help clear it.
I will be taking her to work tomorrow so she should be fine then too. I just hope that she has a more settled night tonight!

My vet told me that she is waiting for outbursts of flees due to the warm weather....
I have had a really good look at her skin on her face, ears and neck (where she’s been itchy) and can’t see anything. I will get her flea treated asap just in case but I found out that Frontline (which I’ve been using) is useless so will be changing what I use. I will need to get a prescription from the vet to order it first though.
Will definitely keep checking and keep an eye out, thank you.

Hope Oreo is less itchy today. I have noticed Harley itching over the past few days so have just treated with flea treatment. It’s strange as I can’t see any reason for it either!

I noticed a catflap in your new house last night @Naya, and wondered whether there were a few fleas hidden in the carpet from the last owners? Just a couple of fleas can really irritate a dog, and are impossible to detect. Cat fleas are far more common than dog fleas and really can bother dogs.

Fleas aren’t the only cause for itchiness. Environmental allergens (like grass) can also cause itchiness, as can moulting. I’d first check carefully for fleas before putting pesticide on your dog. There are also other ways to treat against fleas, which are harmless to your dog—such as a good shampooing, thorough combing with a flea comb, vacuuming carpets and laundering bedding, and if needed, then flea bombing the house to kill fleas in the house.

I don’t think it could be from a cat as the cat flap was put in by the owners previous to the one we brought off off and they moved out 7 years ago. The last owner didn’t have a cat. The flap has always been locked and can only be opened by a chip. It also strange that it’s only been the past week and we moved in last September.

Vet says that Oreo has just had a reaction to something on her walk or whatever that she’s come in contact with. It apparently a “myth” that hormones can cause physical issues such as itching and it’s only really psychological things hormones change (like mood/clingyness).
He says that as she is less itchy now, then she’s getting over it and not to worry - her ears look perfect (apart from a wee scab where her claw obviously caught it), so no worries there either.
I asked him what dose of Piriton I could give her if it ever happens again so I’m glad I discussed that with him. It’s so handy having a vet on hand that I don’t have to pay for!

Basically, she’s fine and I was worrying about nothing :giggl:
