Itchy Rory

I was going to try it this year with Quinn but with the lockdowns I decided not to. My vet said some dogs respond super well and others still require pills at peak itchy times - not sure that helps you!

Maxx has a boxer friend with super itchy skin and her owner swears by the injections. Not sure if it is the same over there but here they are eye-wateringly expensive

Yep that seems to have less side effects and most importantly doesn't do damage to kidneys or liver. Both can give d&v but cytopoint seems to last a bit longer in some cases. Rorys kidney function is just within normal range so it's something to think about.

What do you think about Apoquel? We were considering it early this year, but then the weather got cold and Snowie stopped being itchy. Now it’s Spring and his tummy is raging red and he can’t stop licking and scratching. Apparently it’s like cortisone but more targeted, so has less negative effects. I haven’t heard of the injections here.

No because it can effect kidneys and liver.also it has/can have more gastric side effects

I’m in such a quandary. He’s almost 10 yo. Protect his kidneys and liver but he suffers from itchiness, or take the risk and give him an itch-free rest if his life?

Both get Cytopoint . Honey only every few months as her itchiness is not that bad (yet). She gets 30ml

Vanilla gets one every month at 40ml, but spring and summer she gets one every 3weeks. We also use malaseb shampoo with her paws and around bum/vulva 3 times a week. Plus have to clear her ears once a week with special mix.

We spent a lot of time trying to figure out best options over the years with a specialist.
He did say aim for cytopoint is approx every 6-8 weeks. This works for Honey, but Vanilla no chance.

Not cheap here, but covered under insurance so that helps. Close to cost neutral for between those two.

As always everything has advantages and disadvantages and potentially side effects.

I’ve been happy with apoquel - it gives some flexibility for Quinn who I’ve managed her seasonal itchiness and gotten down to one pill every 2-3 days for two months only this year. I would discuss apoquel vs cytopoint with your vet as there are pros and cons to both. I chat to our vet each spring about which way to go. I have been giving Quinn a different oil on her food (from the vet) for skin support and the difference was big in her level of itchiness this year - much reduced so it’s almost better than I didn’t do cytopoint this year because I wouldn’t have known if it was the injection working or not.
