Make sure she doesn't under sell her talents xx
I don't know if major/minors exist in the UK university the same way as in the US, but if they do... how about a major in art and minor in business (focus marketing or fine art marketing) or vice versa? You can be the most talented artist in the world, but your target market has to know about you and understand your value for you to make a living. Having a viable business model and putting an accurate price your time is really key. Says someone who gave the pet portrait business a go many years ago and underpriced myself to the point that I didn't want to paint again for the next 20 years. Could still be why for Mags' doodle group I'm incapable of drawing a dog that ends up actually looking like the dog in my source photo. Subconscious rebellion? 😂

No we only have joint honours. But as far as I’m aware you can’t just pick any subjects and combine them, the university offers specific joint honours.

I say that because better paper will mean her works last a very long time, as they deserve to, and it’s much sturdier and flatter for framing. Also a lot nicer to work with. These drawings warrant the good stuff.

This was the drawing of Oreo, which the artist was charging me £42 for framed! She apparently wasn't charging me for the frame as there was a small mark on it 🤷‍♀️ and it wasn't an exact match to the one she did of Lilly. The drawing is A4 sized approx, it maybe looks bigger here.received_314870189494957.jpeg

I think I sent £80, which is still less than it's worth, in my opinion.

She’s charging £25 at the moment plus £5 delivery... I thought that was reasonable?
FAAAAAAR too cheap! I agree with at least doubling it - even tripling it would be more than reasonable - giving herself a reasonable hourly rate for a skilled job and allowing herself to use better paper.

I'm in several photography groups with pro photographers and the ones who are charging the least are having the most struggles and working the hardest. Price for your target market, not the one you think you have. Some photographers are offering the "shoot and burn" low end where they are sometimes charging as little as $25 for a collection of digital files. Others never have a session where the client walks away without having spent at least $1,800 on wall art. Both clients will be more than happy to part with that money!

I would suggest she gets a nice frame and takes photographs of them mounted to build a good looking portfolio. You only need one frame if they're all the same size, as they can all be photographed in the same one before giving them to whoever's bought them.

OH is an artist, and he always says this is the luxury goods market, where people generally value things more when they have to think before spending that much money. Obviously you can't charge too much; it's a balance. But I certainly think most pet owners would pay 100 pounds for a framed drawing of that quality of their beloved pooch. Go Kloe!

I think she definitely needs to up her prices, maybe a scaled rate depending on the size of the piece, and whether it's colour or not ( I assume this is more time consuming?) Maybe £25 to 30 for a small A5 pencil sketch, because it's nice to offer a budget option for some people, or kids buying their parents / grandparents a thoughtful gift. But then at least double that for a larger a4 size, and then more again for larger, or a colour sketch?

And defo invest in some frames( don't have to be expensive, maybe a trip to Dunelms or similar) and charge a mark up on those too.
