Lambies for Red please

How is Red today
Thank you for asking Cath. A bit of a disturbed night. I have slept downstairs the last two nights near her. The first night she wanted to go out once but last night it was 4 times. She only had one wee so I concluded she was in discomfort - the daily pain relief had probably worn off. It poured with rain in the night so a bit grim stood outside. She is also probably very hungry as she can only have wet food a little and often. We have the first follow up at the vets this afternoon.

It’s disheartening when you’ve cared for her teeth so well to still have dental issues
Yes she has now lost 7 teeth - 4 a few years ago and 3 recently. I find this shocking

All that anticipation can take a toll on us humans!
Yes I am fortunate in that I can focus on her

Poor wee girlie - at least she has a good nurse in you xx
I hope the vet is pleased with her progress and maybe Red can have a little more to eat and perhaps more pain relief so she can start to feel more comfortable xx

First follow up appointment and all as it should be at this point. Red has had her usual walks today and she can have her normal tea as long as I soak the kibble part of it.

i mentioned my sadness at the loss of seven teeth and the vet nurse said ‘Out of 42 in total, 7 isn‘t too bad’ which is one way of looking at it. She also said she’s had a Labrador in who only has 4 teeth but manages to eat kibble ok, although he probably inhales it.

Second follow up is next Saturday

Yeah, I guess that’s the glass half full point of view, but it doesn’t help you feel better in the moment. 🥺

They do seem to get along surprisingly well after tooth loss, even a significant one. Long story which I’ve told on the forum before, but my pittie girl Jodhi lost nearly all her teeth at 8 years old. Lived to 16 without a single issue eating. Dogs are amazing! 🥰

Second follow up appointment this morning and all is well although the stitches are still there which surprised me. Vet nurse was happy with her and Jess her vet walked by, saw Red, gave her a big smile and came and gave her a fuss. That’s it now unless we have any concerns. I bought a long handled toothbrush to see if that is better than the little blue finger sleeve brush for her back teeth

I'm so glad Red's fine and that there are no further concerns. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the long handled toothbrush. I also use one of the little blue finger ones for Joy and although she's most obliging about tooth cleaning (she lies down on her back with her paws in the air and lets me do it) I also have concerns about reaching the back ones.

Carbon’s dental stitches hung in for quite a long time too. Thought for sure I’d have to take him in again to get them removed, but one day they were just gone. Hope Red’s are easy too!

she tolerates the front ones being done but it’s more difficult doing the back ones
Aren’t they funny on which ones are ok to brush and which not? Carbón will lay there with his mouth flopped open to have the back and sides done, but try to brush the front ones and it’s like I’m suddenly torturing him. I think they are more sensitive (also why he won’t ‘smile’ if it’s cooler than 20C) but who really knows.

I used to use the long handled doggie toothbrush but tried a super soft toothbrush for humans with a smallish head and that was even better. It’s probably like people - everyone is a bit different in what works best.
