Leaving a pup for 10 hours.

I’m in various Facebook groups for Labs, this one is Labrador owners club.

I’m going to leave the group - far too many people who have no idea about dogs. A lot from the USA. It gets my day to a bad start.

But I’ve now joined this argument and I’m so upset for the pup I’m nearly in tears. So many people don’t want to ‘judge’ - we’ll I’m more than happy to ‘judge’ if it makes life bearable for a puppy! I will stay while the thread continues or I’m blocked. Polite and assertive but no apologies or backing down from my position.

Eurgh, well done Mags - it’s tough to be in the melee and putting the counter arguments (and frankly that’s partly why I avoid Fb) but v important people see there are other views/ways.

We also maybe need to think about whether we want to create a few of these TLF-style articles to help guide people. Quite labour intensive, but a really useful resource to link people to.

That is so sad. There are just so many things puppies need to explore and do when young, and that certainly doesn't include being left alone for 10 hours. This is just asking for trouble later on down the line, and another young dog ends in a shelter. I am not a member of any of these groups, just too depressing.
I agree though, having a repository for articles that we could signpost people to would be a good idea. It is encouraging that when the right advice filters through it really can make a difference. The vast majority of new dog owners aren't cruel, just ignorant. I would though rather see more people getting dogs for the right reasons because they just want a dog to be a dog, not a f@cking practice baby for example....

That is so sad. I left an Australian lab group on FB when people started talking about hitting their dogs to prevent nipping in puppies and walking on choke chains.

Bloody idiots. We just loved our puppy and he hasn't nipped (intentionally) anyone in months.

I like the idea of developing some articles too, if people have the time to commit.

That poor, poor lonely little pup. The owner doesn't even speak of him/ her with anything that sounds remotely like affection let alone love. It makes me want to cry too, and to give my GGJ extra cuddles. That's the easy bit.

The thing is - they know it’s cruel, everyone knows it’s cruel - one of the biggest things about getting a dog is.. it can’t be left for too long on its own.

But they don’t care. They wanted the dog - the dog will fit in with their lifestyle. They think having a dog is a god given right, not a privilege.

There was that girl on TLF the other week asking if she could leave her dog for 3 days as long as it had food and puppy pads - errr no you absolute muppet, you can’t! And the fact you would even ask that shows that you shouldn’t have one.

When I was in labour I blagged OH to ring his mam from 2am - 6am to ring someone to go and get Stanley because I was worried about him. I certainly wasn’t like oh he’ll be fine!

Omg yes. Part of my birth plan is in-laws/my parents to come to our place (which is close to hospital) to mind the dog!

Am even uncertain how many nights I want OH to room with me at the hospital because I feel uncomfortable about other people looking after the dog. Am a bit crazy.

Maybe she should be locked in a room for 10 hours, with a pad on the floor in case she needs the toilet, and do this for several days. I bet she would hate it

It does often seem to be Americans talking about leaving their dogs for extended periods of time. That said, it does happen here and people look at me like I'm overly indulgent when I talk about walkers and daycare...

I know quite a few people who leave their dogs all day when they’re at work, and I have to admit - their dogs are fine.

They didn’t do it when they were puppies though, they would go home at lunch or get someone to pop in. Their dogs have always been left what I would deem to be too long though, but like I say - their dogs don’t seem to have any problems.

Some years ago a friend of mine had to have an emergency C section. She sent her husband home to their adult but highly strung Setter who she felt had been alone for longer than usual with the words, 'I understand what's going on, Reuben (the dog) doesn't'. I think it's the thing about her that has most impressed her husband throughout their marriage. He still tells the tale with tears in his eyes after a few drinks.
