Leptospirosis?

Will be getting the little fella home in a few weeks. I'm being told not to have the leptospirosis vaccination as part of his core vaccines. Any thoughts?

I suppose it depends on the likelihood of contact with the bacteria. We definitely opt for it here...there are LOTS of rats and I see them bimbling about in the ditches that run down the side of the roads we walk, and the dogs sniff in. A Lab, who is more than likely going to be a water baby, is likely to come into contact with rat's urine.
We have the L4 vaccine. For me, the risk from the vaccine is very, very low and the risk of contact with Lepto is much higher.

From one of out local vets' webiste..
"Your dog needs vaccinating against Parvovirus, Distemper, Adenovirus (Infectious Canine Hepatitis), Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease) and sometimes kennel cough. The biggest infection risk to dogs in the Isle of Man is leptospirosis which can be picked up by sniffing, drinking or swimming in water contaminated by rodents. It can also be transmitted to humans and annual vaccinations are needed to keep your dog protected."

Fergus gets lepto2, our vet doesn’t give Lepto 4 as they believe it is not necessary where we live. I know when Fergus was a pup, there was a lot of discussion on social media about the perceived dangers of Lepto 4 vaccine. I trust our vet, she is very up to date, things like don’t neuter til growth plate closed, and 3 yearly vaccines not annual. (Apart from Lepto and Kennel cough if required). We are probably moving house later this year. I dread having to find a new vet practice.

If you decide to have the vaccination, ask to have the puppy vaccinations and any others spaced over a few weeks, not all at once. I’ve read this is best practice for puppy health. Otherwise, it’s a lot for an immature immune system to deal with.

I spoke to J and a few others the general consensus seems to be ,do L2 if its recommended. I've been doing a fare bit of reading about it too. Thanks though it's worth knowing. It's not a core vaccine in most places

All ours have had Lepto 4. Having chickens, walking them in the country, and close to water for me meant opting for the broadest activity in terms of strains.
