Limited Slip

@Beanwood i noticed in your video about Romeo you said you were using a limited slip, is that the one from Tuffstuff? I looked at those but noticed they asked the size of the dogs neck, I was a bit puzzled by that as my limited slip can be adjusted to any neck size. Am I being stupid or why do they ask for the size?

Yes, @SteffiS, it is this one Limited slip lead from Tuffstuff. I guess they want your dog's neck size so they ensure that at the tightest adjustment, it is not too tight for your dog? Just my guess though! :)
I always have one rolled up in a pocket, easy to grab, not just for my dog, but if I need it for someone else. I also use them for steadiness work, then I might loosely hold across the chest of the dog. I use limited slips for gundog training, and work in the paddock and fields.

The TuffStuff lead has a metal ring as the stopper, you can see it here on the right of the picture:

So, whilst there is adjustment (the black slider you and see on the left of the loop), it is set so that there is an absolute minimum loop size. Then there's a sliding stopper which you can use to stop it opening too much if you want (although I got told off by @bird for using this - in the nicest possible way, of course ;) ).

I have another limited slip which has a sliding metal thing which you position so it could be any size. The benefit of the fixed ring on the TuffStuff one is that it can't slip, however much the dog is pulling. And, since the TuffStuff one is a nice wide collar, I would be happier using that with a dog that might pull during training than I would be using my other limited slip, which is a round rolled nylon one.

My problem was because I'm really not used to using leads (again pointed out in the nicest possible way!) and so I fumble over them. So having the slider pushed up close means there's one more thing to have to fiddle with. Whereas getting that out of the way means it's far easier to take on and off, which is important for someone that's as kak-handed as I am. It also means when the lead is off, it's easy to loop over your shoulder.
I need to practice more with using it, my lead skills are pretty embarrassing.
"Wot do I do wiv this then?" :wasntme:

That was why I was interested in this slip lead, but I couldn't get my head round the sizing bit, thank you for that, I will probably order one of these now (when OH isn't looking "yes, we've had this lead for ages, I just haven't used it much" ).

I wonder if it's because the ones with an adjustible size (that I have seen) had a double D-ring as the "stopper" and can also be used as a figure-8 lead and they (the company) don't feel this is appropriate.
A lot of "if's" in the above statement so probably unlikely.
Leads like this one -

I know our previous trainer positively promoted this to be used as a figure of 8.

Yup, @Jacqui-S, my other limited slip is like that. I guess in theory the double-D ring could slip if the dog pulled hard. I think that if your dog is likely to pull, they shouldn't be on one of these round rope collars as they are quite thin. I use mine here around the land sometimes and tried to use it on the training camp, but the dogs were too excited and likely to pull, so I went back to the TuffStuff one.

I love my tuffstuff leads. They're really comfy to hold. Only two minor downsides - they do hold water and the collar bit does twist occasionally. Neither have prompted me to change leads though I'm still very happy with them. Mine are purple too ???

@snowbunny makes me sound so fierce! I merely pointed out it would be ideal to minimise faffing whilst retrieving ;)

If I was spending quite a bit of time on lead I might slide the stopper down so the loop doesn't get too big and the dog can reverse out of it.

If I'm working or training the dogs I slide it right up to the handle. Slip leads should be easy to put on and take off. If it's like wriggling into your tightest jeans then the loop's too small! ?

Lots of interesting info here, I did wonder whether the tuffstuff lead might twist, but it doesn't sound too much of a problem.
@Jacqui-S when you say figure of 8 I assume you mean looped over the nose? I've never used my lead like that although I've seen it promoted by a few trainers.
Anyway I shall be ordering this slip lead to add to my collection of leads :D.
