These are the criteria Ted will need to meet in about a year’s time for his assessment as a PAT dog.
The one I’m especially aware of is ‘no pawing or paws up’. We teach this with GD pups and it’s easy and obvious that a big dog pawing you isn’t comfortable and putting two paws up could knock folk over.
But a little dog? I never worried about my cavaliers putting their paws up on me to be lifted up or fussed.
So this will be a challenge!
So far I’m doing three things -
1. Standing up and moving away as soon as he puts his paws up.
2. Using treats (his food) and asking for a ‘sit’ then lifting him up.
3. Gently putting his paws down, giving him a fuss, then picking him up once he’s forgotten having his paws up.
If you have any other ideas let me know!
