Living with Poppy 18/10/21

I should have entitled this "A Nightmare on Elm Street".

Pops overall is doing well, I think. By way of an example, our next door neighbour is moving and they invited the immediate neighbours to drinks and snacks in their front garden yesterday afternoon. I'd just recieved a new Julius IDC Long Walks harness so I decided to take Poppy along and try it out. She's well used to working with a harness so putting it on and adjusting it was really easy because she just stands patiently letting it all happen. It was fine and I was really proud of her. She just sat beside me the whole time. I think that must be down to her previous life training. I'm guessing that when she was working she would sit next to her handler for long periods.

Today, however, she was like one of those dogs you see on television programmes where their owners have completely lost it! We got to the water meadow and I kept her on the lead until a GSD had disappeared out of sight then let her off. She trotted off ahead, stopped, scanned the horizon and spotted a ..... RABBIT. She was off and stone deaf, disappearing from sight into the trees surrounding a spring. This no ordinary spring. Oh no! It's made up of stinking green goo. The previously yellow girl emerged - that's the only way to describe it - like the beast from the primordial soup. She was now mainly black with hints of green and stinking.

In these circumstances I feel the only option is to get her into the river for a pre-wash before a full shampoo at home. This did not go well because she was now pumped up with adrenalin and also thought the water was too cold or something. Then out of the woods came three dog walking friends with six dogs. Pops takes off towards them at which point two of the three put a dog each on those horrible extending leads with really thin cord a bit like a cheese cutter. I mean WHAT! So Pops gets stuck in and there was a real risk of injury to all concerned. If they had just left the dogs free it would have been much better. Anyway I got to the scene and managed to grab Pops harness. Apologies all round but those leads should be banned.

They paddled off presumably mutternig sweet nothing under their breath about my out of control dog.

Anyway got her in the river at a cost of two tennis balls. Got her home and shampoo'd. She now asleep next to me without a care in the world. I just love her to bits.

Note to self: Poppy is still a work in progress. :cwl:

This doesn't sound like a nightmare at all @David , I'd say it sounds like a huge success overall! She seems to have bonded really well with you and her fab behaviour at your neighbours ' drinks, in an environment I'm guessing she may not be familiar with and people she doesn't know (and a situation you haven't encountered with her before?) is just brilliant. Well done for setting her up so well.

The rabbit chasing is clearly going to be a work in progress (!) but you've got all the knowhow to work on that together. I guess your rabbit spotting skills may also sharpen over time..?! Those leads are a blooming nightmare. I know we've had conversations here on the forum and some use them very sensibly, but many out there don't and I've seen some painful injuries to hoomans caused by them. So pleased Poppy avoided mishap.

She now asleep next to me without a care in the world. I just love her to bits.
This is the best thing to read ever! So pleased for both of you.

At least you managed to get her in the river for a pre wash. About 2 years ago Harley done something similar……but there was no river or clean water anywhere!! My car stank for weeks.

Oh Lordy I think we’ve all been there!! Those leads should be banned. We had one years ago but I threw it away. Bless her for sitting so nicely. I’ve seen a lot of Julius harnesses recently and wondered about one for Red. She hates her Perfect Fit and I’m not happy when she pulls on her collar. Well done Poppy for sitting so still by your side - what a good girl - we’ll keep quiet about the rabbit chasing 🤣

Is it naughty that I was sniggering when I first read it?
Yes there are blips but one thing is for sure your lives will never be dull with Poppy!
As you said those leads should be banned. They once nearly tore Hunter's back leg just after he had recovered after his second elbow operation. We thought his cruciate had been torn.

I'm just looking on it all as part of life's rich pattern. We had similar, although slightly different experiences with Lady when she was a pup. They all seem to just resolve themselves as the dogs mature. I think the important thing is keeping at it and working on getting the right behaviours. For example when we got Poppy she just pulled like a train. She now doesn't and in the street pretty much always walks alongside. In quiet environments with no distractions she will also walk by my side with no lead. So just keeping consistent I think will get us there in the end.

Currently interactions with other dogs is the top difficulty. I've already posted about lead aggression and that's now better although not cured. Off lead she is a bit of an enigma. Some of the time she interacts with other dogs in a quite adult manner - waggy tail, sniff and ignore. Sometimes a bit of zoomies with the other dog as well. Other times she just goes bonkers. This could be anything but most likely habit with a particular dog, or body language with the owners. Anyway onwards and upwards hopefully.

You must write a book David

Keeps you young too, eh?
Actually that is a really interesting point. One of the things we agonised about before Poppy came on the scene was were we too old for a new dog. Things can easily go pear shaped with health with little warning. I've had two replacement hips and one knee replacement. The remaining knee is showing signs of problems, but of more concern was my left ankle and it was giving me a lot of pain. We cracked on anyway and Poppy arrived. I was forced to walk and walk and walk with the little bundle of joy. The ankle problems have disappeared completely. The left knee is still making me aware that it is a bit worn out but not nearly as bad as it was. On holiday recently the longest walk we did was 10 miles.

Get a dog and get fit. :pull:

This was me with puppy Maisy (including the stinking mud)

Poppy is still a work in progress but aren't they all? Just tell yourself it is a phase and will get better

I confess to laughing at your description I'm afraid, I could see it all unfolding in front of me :dug:
