Maxx and the deck

Maxx is pretty bomb-proof and confident, except every now and then he gets the heebie-jeebies about a certain surface or area - namely:
1. If he has a slip on our wooden floorboards he might refuse to walk across that area for a while. We put down mats, encourage gently and the problem will be gone in a few days
2. A bit worse is the last few steps of our indoor carpeted stairs. He happily waddles down the first 10 to the landing but sometimes he then baulks against about going down the last 5. It is a bit dark down there and I think the shadows sometimes scares him. He stands on the landing moving his head around a bit like Stevie Wonder. - almost like he is seeing ghosts. Again we know exactly what to do, put his collar and lead on and stand next to him and walk him down with a hand on his shoulder. He will take a few days but eventually do one step, then another until he has forgotten about it and thundering down in his usual, exuberant manner

However now we have a much bigger problem. He goes to the toilet on the side deck that is very well drained and we don't have any problem with smell as we hose it and it drains away (we don't have grass). Maxx now has the heebie jeebies about going onto the deck and is toileting on the path that has no drainage and. it. stinks. To high heaven. I'm not sure but I think what freaked him out was one night about 2 weeks ago I took him for a last wee and there was a loud crashing in the tree and along the bushes at the back of the pool. It had to be the worlds biggest possum, I can't think of anything else. He was already hesitating a bit and that seemed to finish him off

We have managed to get him to go up onto the deck with food lures and Steve got him to wee up there once last week but mostly while he will happily run after scattered food, once we stop he immediately runs off or if we are blocking the exit he just stands there frozen refusing to wee. Once he runs off he stands at the bottom of the two steps looking at us as if to say 'this is where I wee now Mum and Dad, ok?'

He got Steve up in the middle of the night last week and ran straight up onto the deck for a poo, clearly forgetting about his fright as he was still half asleep

We are at our wits end. I suggested a behaviourist but at more than $1,000 and no guarantee we just can't do it. He is spending 2 weeks in the kennels over Christmas so perhaps he will forget.

Any thoughts dear friends? Here is a picture of the two steps up to the deck. We have moved the plants, moved the table, cleared everything and anything we can find but it hasn't helped. There is even no-slip tape on the steps (like we have everywhere outside)

So just so I understand, is he now weeing on the concrete paved area in the photo with the balls on it? And you don’t want him to do that as it doesn’t drain and so smells?
It’s tricky, all I can think right now is if you can train him to wee in a certain place using something like a litter tray - are trainer behaviorists really expensive? It does feel like that might be your most effective route if you can find the right one. Would online consults give you more scope?

Yes that's right @HAH, anywhere on that path leading up to the steps. I think we will see what happens after Christmas and if it is still going on we will just have to get someone in. Thanks for your input :)

I would suggest picking up some poop and leaving it for a few days in the area you want him to use.
And encourage him to do so as often as possible by taking him there on lead (a major hassle in my book but if you have the motivation......)
@Boogie always trained her pups to be busy in a specific area so she may have some tips, although I realise technically Maxx isn't a pup 😉

If you put his lead on to take him where you want him to go, would he refuse to move? I agree that the possum would have triggered all this off - they don’t easily forget what has frightened them. I hope you can sort this but you do need a plan of action that you use every time you go out so it becomes the new routine. Hope you don’t have to get a behaviourist

Sometimes he refuses and we don't force him. This afternoon we have a precious pigs ear today that gets taken to the deck every 30 mins or so while we encourage him to wee. It hasn't worked so far

Great idea, thanks Jac

And yes, technically he is not a puppy

I think you stressing about it will just make things worse, because he will of course pick up on your tension and just be confirmed in his belief that the deck is now A Bad Place.

I would suggest keeping a bucket of water by the steps and just swooshing them down once he's done a pee. I know you say it doesnt drain properly, but for now it will just have to do... Hopefully at some point he'll come around to the deck again.

I do understand because Poppy took against our garden at one point, after being stung by wasps on the lawn. She REFUSED to go down the garden AT ALL for months...

it. stinks. To high heaven.
Might it be worth getting some cleaner that would do away with the smell? When Cass was a puppy I had some stuff called 4MalOdour (I think it was,)

for cleaning up wees and poos in the house, Apparently it is used in sewers!

Hopefully this will be a short term affair!

Cass too has episodes of not liking a part of our garden, various reasons over the years, but she inevitably gets over it so I get what you are dealing with. She really does prefer not to wee/poo in our small garden, and I just have to slip her lead on and she will relieve herself on the grass by my car park. Bit of a pain in the winter but at least I know she has been!

Sorry to hear you’re having this issue, poor Maxx. I don’t really have any tips (Neo refuses to toilet in the garden despite my best efforts so out we go 🙄), other than with the cleaners, I would just double check how ‘pet safe’ they are as when I was looking into them I found a lot of them stated they were but only when dry, which isn’t always that useful depending on the weather at the time.

So an update: We were patiently taking him down to the deck a few times each day but letting him move off when he wants so he didn't get stressed. We had a single pigs ear (his highest value treat) that we always took so he knew what his reward would be but he still would not wee.

Yesterday I took him down and he looked at me and sighed and did a great big wee right in the middle of the deck! Of course an immediately pigs ear reward and he very happily trotted off to his outside bed to munch it. By now we had collected 4 poos and scattered them around (thanks for the tip @Jacqui-S !!). Then today Steve was giving him a bath (I had to go into the office) and during the 10 minutes we leave the malaseb on prior to rinsing he ran down and did another one! I feel we may have broken the back of the problem

Hooray! Patience and time do pay off (as do scattered poos  )

Wonderful news about the deck use!

With the hotter weather, our garden path is rather smelly. Snowie wees in various places in our tiny garden. We have given up trying to move him off the patch of lawn; it’s now burnt. I pour water with lovely scented laundry soap into the garden when the smell gets too bad. If you’re still looking for enzyme cleaners, Simple Solution is pricy (it’s imported here) but smells DIVINE!!!
