Meals and exercising

Due to life changes I have had to pull Axel out of daycare a couple weeks ago as I can’t afford the steep charge on my own anymore. So now I have to exercise him before work and after work by myself which is fine and enjoyable but it is an adjustment. Such as, no more sleeping in!

I have been on holidays for the last week so it’s been easy, been feeding Axel as soon as we are up then exercising him two hours later. But in a couple days I head back to work.

How long do you wait after feeding a meal before you walk your dogs? I’m always worried about bloat:confused:

I’ve thought about feeding him after exercising but he’s usually panting from his running around that I worry he will regurgitate and start that whole cycle again. (Lasted a couple months last time)

Stanley only gets very small meals and I give him his breakfast straight before his morning walk. Then he gets the rest during his walk.

He seems to be fine on it :giggle:

Could you exercise him first in the mornings, and then leave him his breakfast as a couple of kongs just as you leave for work? I'm guessing that there's a gap between you returning from your walk and then leaving for work, (hopefully avoiding the threat of bloat) and the kongs will wear him out nicely while you are out and take much longer to consume than food in a bowl.

You should never exercise a dog with food in it's stomach as it can cause bloat. During the week Hattie & Charlie are fed around 30 -45 minutes after their walk, if they are still panting longer. At the weekend routine goes out of the window and they are sometimes fed before their walk but the same principle applies timewise. xx

I walk Lilly first, shower, then feed her, let her out of she wants, then go to work.
For me it's a 6.15 alarm, 30 min or so walk the leave 7.30 ish.
It works for us.
Sorry about your break up.
For us, it's so much easier in the morning without OH, Lilly is more focused on MY routine and easier to organise.
A delicate question, but do you have "access" arrangements. Ignore me if that's too intrusive x

I am on my own every morning with Quinn and our routine is I get up and get ready for work, wake Quinn for her walk at 7:20, home at 7:50 and fill her water and leave her food in a toy dispenser and Kongs at 8:05. It worries me every day that I only wait about 15 mins before feeding, but I’ve been doing it for two years with no issues. I like to have her out as close to when I have to leave as possible to pee etc. I like to think that the toy and Kong’s are such slow eating that bloat wouldn’t happen...

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I can’t leave him with kongs unfortunately as Gizmo is a pig and tries to steal Axel’s food.

I can’t really take food with me on walks right now, well, I could but I’m chicken! I worry that’s basically inviting the bears to come find me. :ROFLMAO:

But it sounds like walking him first thing then letting him rest for 45 minutes will be ok. I’ll plan to walk him at 6:30 then be home for about 7:10 then will feed him at 8. I leave for work at 8:20 so I will have some wiggle room.

Bears aghhhhhh! I'd forgotten about your daily hazard!

What about a Kong for Gizmo with wet cat food in? Big enough to be safe for Axel, probably not frozen as I imagine cats don't like cold food, and if they get mixed up, not the end of the world as long as they have no food allergies?

Come to think of it, is there a market for cat kongs? ?

I think access means do you guys have an agreement that he will still see Axel. Access is the legal term in divorce agreements of when each parents gets the kid(s)! I think it's pretty common that people share dogs now...I know a couple situations where the former couple shares the dog, particularly around work and travel schedules.

Yup this what I mean't @Kelsey&Axel .
I don't think you get "Maintenance" money for dogs in the same way as for children, but maybe you should these days.

Ohhh ok. The answer would be no. We work the same schedule anyways so that part wouldn’t matter. But I don’t want him having Axel ever. Axel is my everything and I won’t be allowing him to see him except for meeting us for a walk sort of thing. If he even asked, which I doubt he would. He never wanted animals, and has mentioned on numerous occasions that he would be a bit sad rehoming Axel but he would because animals are a ‘burden’. Sigh.

He obviously isn’t an awful person or I wouldn’t have been with him for 13 years. But he’s 100% not an animal person, I just didn’t know that, nor did he, until we got our first dog Odie a few months before we got married, 9 years into our relationship.

I would be completely shocked if he asked for access to Axel. But we currently are only separated, so I won’t know for sure until we can file for divorce next spring. But I think he knows well enough that Axel is my dog. :)
