Measuring for perfect fit harness?

Brodie has grown out of his harness (petsafe) and the next size up of that one is too big, oddly. So we need a new harness. I think he is an odd shape as he has a deep chest and a very long back so perfect fit seems like a good idea as we can buy the pieces separately. But the perfect fit website is really unhelpful for measuring and ordering. It just says to measure girth, but what about the other pieces? Their breed selector doesn't include working cockers anyway, and as I think he is not a 'standard' shape I'd prefer to measure the pieces separately. I want to buy the 20mm individual pieces I think. Would be very grateful for any measuring tips, am sure I am being a bit dense with this.

Ring their help line they are very helpful. Just measure him and they should be able to suggest sizes

The harness has arrived, its not the right fit which is annoying - too tight behind his legs which is exactly what I had asked about and explained with the measuring so a bit irritated that it has to be returned. I'm also a bit underwhelmed by the harness generally, very flimsy clips in the 20mm and brodie seems to dislike the very loud clicky noise they make so will need a bit of sensitisation. I'm not sure whether its worth persevering with different sizes. Does anyone have other brands they like? I've used haqihana for jess, but would prefer something softer and more comfortable if possible.

I would get on the phone and send it back. I spoken to a really helpful woman who makes fleece harnesses I've got some coming next week. She's very bossy about measurements she a perfectionist she like to get it right. She's making iver a made to measure as his weird half grown body needs it. They are very padded and seem strongly made and she does take time making them. It might be worth having a look I didn't suggest them the other day as I've not got them and tried them yet. Even the made to measure wasn't expensive

Thanks, yes I would consider a made to measure though also need something soon...i was looking at a company called space k9 or space textiles. Have you seen them? I quite like the design but they are obviously a small scale operation so not sure what the quality will be like.

I've just received the new harnesses and the build quality and fit is very good.
That's good - glad you like them. I am using the perfect fit after all - with a bit of adjustment it fits ok and he doesn't mind wearing it now, so that will work for the time being and I can keep looking for an actually perfect fit harness later!

Thought I’d resurrect this thread as I’m trying to replace Toffee’s 20mm Perfect Fit harness (inherited from Ripple who wore it as a puppy) with a 40mm. It finally broke when Toffee was pulling like mad as he was overexcited walking with my daughter and her partner. Looking at the harness it was obviously long overdue replacing as there were lots of worn pieces on it :$.

I thought I’d get the 40mm but it’s been difficult to get the size right, I measured his girth and followed their sizing advice but the pieces they suggested nearly throttled him as there was only one adjustment on the smallest front piece so it’s too tight to his neck. I spoke to them on the phone and they sent the medium front piece, I think it fits ok but they’ve asked for pictures and suggested he might be better off back in the 20mm.

Sorry, if that second picture is a bit dark to see much.

That top piece looks a bit short, so from the photo it looks like it sits close to the outside of Toffees elbow in the top photo?

With Casper I wish I had bought the 20mm as 40mm seems a bit bulky, he has a fairy broad barrel of a chest.

I've got a 40 and twenty. The forty never seems to fit properly so I just use a 20 which seems fine. Even the black mountains seems ok. I rang them and they insisted the 40 was best but the 20 seems best for my dogs

Yes, I can see exactly what you mean @Beanwood , perhaps I should get a bigger top piece to try. The 40mm seems big on Toffee to me because I’m used to the 20mm, I just thought it might be a bit more comfortable.

So much easier to go to a shop - well possibly, Toffee would probably be an idiot in a shop  .
If I was near to the shop or a shop Id go it's so much easier to get it fitted right. Rory would be cuddly and try to kiss everyone there but Iver would be bouncy very licky silly and bouncy🙂

After much to and froing of pieces I sent the whole of the 40mm harness back and reordered the 20mm in the size Toffee had been wearing. I'm sure the company thought I was a pain as they had already said the 40 was a good fit from the pictures I sent them, however I decided the 40 was just too bulky, especially the buckles which seemed huge on Toffee.

That's why I stuck with the 20 mm the 40mm was just too chunky and heavy.
