Meg - Finding the right amount of food.

Bladder and kidneys. Not all Dals are susceptible but it is a breed trait. I don’t think it should affect her weight now, but it’s worth keeping an eye on her kidney function. Purine and protein are quite closely linked, but if your dog needs to be on low purine there are certain things that need avoiding, like offal and brewers yeast, which is in a lot of commercial foods.

Ella always gets kibble for breakfast and then either kibble for dinner or a reduced amount of kibble, with some extras. Extras include sardines, meats, veggies or special treats (leftovers from our dinner). We stopped giving Ella raw food about 6 months ago for a number of reasons. Firstly, the main reason I'd given her raw meaty bones was for her teeth but they're terrible anyway so the meaty bones didn't help. Secondly, we had four family gastro illnesses in 18months. There's no way I can prove that these were related to the raw food but I know that there have been others to stop raw feeding (e.g. the PAT dogs that Hattie is part of), our vet mentioned it and the potential for familes to get sick, Ella seems more than happy on the cooked meat and lastly - what's the harm in trying?
