Meg's Vaccinations

Wow, that's come around quickly. We have an appointment later on with Vet James, who she saw for a tooth/gum problem and who was brilliant with her. I've not gone down the Gabapentin/Trazadone route this time, so we'll see how it goes. Fingers, toes and everything crossed.

Perfect. It was such a positive consultation.
James squatted on the floor with his back to Meg and spoke very kindly to her. She was scared and jumpy but he was so nice to her.
Eventually he tried to administer the vacc. into her side while I held her head (there was no nurse/experienced reception staff), but I couldn't hold her still, she was desperate to get away and climbing up me, and growling at him and me. After a couple of goes, James realised what she was doing and decided on a different tack, he took her lead and lead her out of the room along the corridor, and quite quickly came back - all done. He said he didn't even have to hold her still, he just asked for a sit along side him and chatted quietly while he stuck her with the thinnest needle they had. She never even noticed.

We continued the chat back in the consultation room, then he led her into the waiting room and I followed and we sat a while. There was another dog at the counter, she was OK, but wary of it He explained to the owner that we were doing some desensitisation. Then the other dog left. He asked what would she be like without the muzzle, I said PROBABLY ok as long as no one was looming at her so he suggested I take it off, she was fine. Then he stood up and went to the treat jar on the counter - Meg was thrilled now. I don't care if she has a poorly tum after all those dodgy treats..

I love how James recognises that Meg isn't unfriendly, just scared.

That’s is really great to hear Sue. It makes such a difference when you get a vet who understands that they are scared and is gentle with them

He really is. He didn't push flea or worm treatment, just offered it if I wanted. He said, well it'll be just Lepto 4 again in 12 months then. I said I really hope you're still here. He said he didn't see why not - Vets seem to come and go so quickly here, so I just keep everything crossed.
