Merlin update

For us the acceptance of the condition was the key to moving forward. It is lovely to read the progress and it helps other people to realise that it is not the end of the world when the health diagnosis is not as expected.
Lorraine and Hunter
Exactly - acceptance is a huge part of being able to deal with things better. However, I have to add that sometimes I am still made terribly sad when I think of all he'll be missing out on... but everyone is right, he doesn't think he's missing out on anything, that is just in my head!!!

Good luck to you and Hunter with the check up and x-ray!

Yes I sometimes feel so sad and I have been a blubbering mess on several occasions.....no doubt more to come....He is such a loving dog and he really has enriched our lives. I really need to work on his obedience now... and his pulling...and his impulse to chase leaves...and his socialization!!
This forum also offer fantastic help and advice and nobody minds if you just need to vent off!!
Hopefully tomorrow goes OK!! Onwards and upwards!:cheeky:

Sigh - now Merlin has cold water tail. I took him to our local pond this morning and must have overdone the dummy retrieving with him. Poor lad, he is feeling a bit sorry for himself...

I gave him Metacam and have kept him quiet this afternoon and evening. I hope he is better tomorrow, as I have run out of Metacam and would have to go to the emergency vet tomorrow to get more... Hopefully he won't need any more painkillers tomorrow, if he does I'll call the emergency vet to find out my options.

No better today, and I've run out of metacam. Just called the vet, who is going to meet me at the surgery at 11:00 for more metacam. In the meantime, luckily I have some other heavy-duty painkillers, Metamizol, left over from when Poppy was spayed and the vet said I should give him some of that for now. Poor lad, I do feel bad, I let him swim too much yesterday, but he was having such a good time...

Apart from the discomfort around his tail he's fine though, ate his breakfast with no problems (doh!)

Here's the poor one:

Poor Merlin. Hope he gets better soon.
Thing is, how do you know what's too much swimming?
It's different for each dog, some can swim all day with no effects. With Merlin, he can crash around in shallow water for hours, it really is the swimming that does him no good. I should only let him do 2-3 retrieves out of water, maximum. He does have that funny bump in his tail, and I think that is the weak point. He's more cheerful now, the painkillers are doing their job.

He's getting nice and muscly on his haunches at any rate, I don't really notice it normally but you can see it on the photo very well.
