Merlin update

Merlin's physiotherapist came for a check up yesterday (first time since December), and was very, very pleased with his progress. We agreed to continue with a check-up every three to four months (unless there are any problems).

I am so happy; a year ago we were in despair after getting his HD diagnosis. Now it seems there is a good chance that with proper management Merlin can continue to have a happy, pain-free and active life. This is wonderful; I love him so much and am so delighted, he's such a charming and engaging fellow and a joy to have around. Long may this continue!

Fantastic news, I'm so pleased for you and Merlin; and this also a great testament to your care of him, as clearly you're doing everything possible to give him his best life with the least discomfort possible. Long may it continue indeed!

I am so pleased for you and for Merlin as well. Do you feel physiotherapy really works?

Unfortunately Rourke has shoulder arthritis and is getting worse despite medication, he has such a pronounced limp now.

To be honest, I've stopped doing the exercises with Merlin now. I am very careful with him though, and really watch what he's doing - I don't let him charge around uncontrolledly with other dogs for instance, though he would like to, and I'm careful about the retrieving work I let him do. What I think a good physiotherapist does is to recognise quickly where there is a problem, and to take steps to help correct that. I think we were very lucky to find out about Merlin's HD long before any symptoms arose - but he will likely develop arthritis later in life. We are enjoying life day to day and grateful for the way things are now.

I am so sorry about Rourke and his arthritis, that is a real shame for him and must make you very sad.

Thank you @MellowYellow, yes it does make me very sad as he is only just 7. He doesn't play with other dogs and just lopes around with his friend the Greyhound on his walks in the wood. Like you, I restrict his retrieving, which he loves so much poor lad. I fear I am not going to have him much longer.

However, I am still very pleased for you re Merlin as I remember feeling your concern when he was first diagnosed x
