How is Simba?

I read this on Snopes: FACT CHECK: Are Raisins and Grapes Toxic to Dogs?

<start quote>
The most common early symptom of grape or raisin toxicity is vomiting, which is generally seen within 24 hours following ingestion. Lack of appetite, lethargy, and possibly diarrhea can be also seen within the next 12-24 hours. More severe signs are not seen for 24-48 hours after ingestion – often after acute kidney failure has already begun. Signs of acute kidney failure include nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting, uremic breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, and excessive urination.
The bottom line is that grapes and raisins can and have caused acute renal failure in some dogs, but others have consumed these fruits without issue. In other words, grapes and raisins are poisonous to some dogs, but not to all of them. Unfortunately, as Brutlag explained, “There is no way to predict which dogs may be more sensitive.”

I recently learned that Snowie has been eating fruit cake when he visits my aunt every week!! I’ve asked my aunt’s carer not to give him anymore. Thankfully, so far, no ill effects at all.

Ella ate quite a few grapes once at the outlaws. We only found out a few days later and she never showed any symptoms!

We certainly got lucky!

On a local fb group that I’m a member of, lots of people talk about how their dogs eat the grapes off the vines with no ill effects! For years.

I once read that the toxic reaction might be connected to the insecticide and anti-mould sprays used on grapes. I remember when I walked the Camino through Spain in 2007 the neon blue, thick liquid that was poured into a canister on the back of a tractor and then sprayed on the vines. It looked so toxic!! I couldn’t drink the Spanish wines for a while after I saw that!! Grapes are highly sprayed here in South Africa, too.

Fingers crossed Simba is in the lucky dog camp who can eat grapes. Belle was a grape eater. She used to steal them and she did eat a whole (small) christmas cake once. We didn't know about grapes being toxic then. She was a lucky dog, she was fine.

I'm sure in the past our dogs ate all sorts of things that we didn't then know were poisonous to dogs and were lucky that there were no ill-effects. I'd always thought they had cast iron stomachs, considering what they must find sniffing in the undergrowth.

I hope Simba's ok.

Blimey, I hope Simba is ok.

Maisy ate some raisins once without us knowing until too late for vomiting but she was fine, our first dog ate loads of grapes in her lifetime but I would be worried about a fruit cake.

I remember when Monty ate about four scones, I roughly worked out the raisin content vs his weight, (I broke up a scone and counted the raisins in it!) and he was well under any danger threshold
