Momentous day—weaned off epilepsy meds

Snowie took his last tiny dose of potassium bromide today. We’ve been weaning him off the meds since May. He’s not had a seizure in almost two years. When he had his blood panel done in April, the meds in his blood were in any case at a sub-therapeutic level so our vet said no need to be on them.

We’re pretty terrified at stopping them! What if the minute dose was preventing the seizures? But our vet said she does not like to medicate unnecessarily.

Also, we stopped using all tick and flea pesticides (spot ons and tablets) almost two years ago, and the seizures stopped. So I’m convinced they were causing his seizures. Yes, my fear of stopping the meds is contradictory!

Anyway, it’s been a long and frightening journey having a dog prone to seizures. When he had his first grand mal seizure at 1.5 years old, I thought it was the end. He’s now almost 7 years old and has never been in better health. In fact, since being weaned off the epilepsy meds, he’s been more playful and perky! I hope ours can be a hopeful story for others.

I know you must be feeling worried, I would be too, but your vet would not recommend this if it weren't the right way forward. You've had a rough and long journey but Snowie is so well, how wonderful. Take a deep breath, foot forward, you've done everything possible for him to prevent any more seizures. All will be well. Take care both of you xxxx

Fantastic news, I am so very pleased for you!!!!! I am sure Snowie will be fine from now on.

Like you, we have decided to try to manage Poppy without any flea or tick medication from now on. We will see how that goes in the spring, when the tick invasion is upon us...
I bought Wondercide from the US. Made from cedar bark, and the one I have is also scented with lemongrass. I think next time I’d get just plain. There’s another called Cedarcide, which I’ve not used. A fb group I belong to swear by the effectiveness of cedar bark spray for repelling ticks and fleas, so I decided to try it out. I can say it is brilliant as a mosquito repellent—just started the season and they attack us in bed at night if I don’t spray this stuff. Smell is too strong for my liking, but apparently not toxic, so I’m happy to use on myself, and on Snowie if necessary. So far, an upside of the drought in Cape Town is that there have been so few ticks that I have not bothered spraying him. I use it on my carpets every now and then in case any fleas are lurking about.

Thanks @M.F. I'll see if we can get that here. I have something called Dynamite for my lot and it does repel some flies, but not as much as I'd like. I do use tick treatments, which are also preventative against the dreaded sand fly here, but they're not 100% - plus I need something for myself! :)
