Neo has a sore throat

A few days ago, Neo started ‘reverse sneezing’ which is nothing new, he does it on occasion, but he really panicked afterwards, struggling to get his breath back. Since then, he has been licking his lips a lot and also developed a bit of a cough at times. We initially put the lip licking down to him feeling a bit queasy after eating cat poop earlier in the day (🙄) but it carried on and was bothering him overnight. He seemed a bit better yesterday but was pacing and licking again overnight so we popped to the vets this morning.
They are a bit perplexed and can’t find anything obvious looking at his mouth and throat, however he was wheezy when the vet pressed on his trachea at a certain point. We’ve been given some anti-inflammatories and will see how he is in a few days. If it doesn’t improve vet says it will need further investigation.
He hasn’t chewed anything untoward for ages so don’t know of anything specific that may have caused it. Has anyone had similar? He’s eating and drinking fine, it seems to bother him more at night, maybe as it’s a bit colder?

As a side note, our vets recently started stocking toys in reception. Being the easy mark that I am, here is Neo with his new candy cane I picked up the other day when I was just stopping in for his prescription!

There's a bug going round and I think it could be this? Iver had a persistent cough. Very slight so I just wasn't sure if it was there or not. The vet suspect KC at first but it didn't go and then he rasped on breathing and then he lost his voice no bark or a husky gruff. She suspects some virus? He had a temp and was a bit miserable. The vet tried anti biotics no change then steroids. It went eventually after about 10 weeks after the course of steroids. A few dogs round here had it and a few cases have appeared on some of the other dog sites I use. Iver now has a normal bark and is fine. It was really strange the vet said his lungs and heart was clear but she could hear a faint rasping around his larynx. Hope he's ok❤
Ps Iver would like me to be clear that the rasping did not come from his bottom.

Kipper does occasionally reverse sneeze and finds it very worrying, but we’ve not had adverse results yet. I hope Neo’s throat resolves itself soon, poor chap. Stilton has a sore ear at the moment which we have steroids for. I guess it’s the season for viruses and bacterial infection, dear pups.

@SwampDonkey thanks for this, sounds pretty similar. Neo’s cough is just a slight one too and not consistent enough to think kennel cough, but it’s clearly making him uncomfortable at times. Will see how he gets on with the anti-inflammatories, hopefully he will be more settled. Glad to hear Iver is feeling better and has his bark back, Billie lost her bark in her latter years as she had a partially paralysed larynx and I felt so sorry for her that she couldn’t speak.

@HAH the reverse sneezing is pretty odd isn’t it, Neo gets pretty upset by it. Sorry to hear Stilton is suffering too, hope the steroids make quick work of his poorly ear.

@Cath thanks for the tip, for some reason I had in my mind it had to be a particular ‘type’ of honey but if regular works too I have some in the cupboard so will give him a lick and see what he thinks 🤞

Awe poor boy. Basically echoing what @SwampDonkey said about a virus of some kind going around… A bunch of cases are showing up in the United States and creeping my way, about five hours from me cases are now being reported (I’m in Canada). It appears like a kennel cough virus but it doesn’t respond to antibiotics and is very contagious. Hope Neo is on the mend very soon, poor boy!

He’s doing better thanks, a lot more settled at night and the reverse sneezing and wheezing/lip-licking has decreased a lot thankfully. Initially he was worse when he was sleeping on his back but now he is fine napping with his feet in the air. He’s finished his course of anti-inflammatories so will keep an eye on him and see if it creeps back but fingers crossed he’s on the mend 🤞

Absolutely wouldn’t entertain the honey tho, stoopid hooman went out and bought the ridiculously expensive manuka one without seeing if he would go for the regular one first, a costly error! 😂
