New research released

The results of a research study of over 3,000 Golden Retrievers have been published, showing there is an increased risk of obesity, and non-traumatic orthopaedic issues in spayed and neutered dogs. The risk of injury is inversely correlated to the age at which the spay/neuter occurred, the obesity is not.

Snowie’s physio said she sees a difference in dogs who are neutered/spayed vs not. She said that unneutered dogs are in better physical health, are better proportioned, and have fewer skeletal and ligament injuries.

I’d have liked to have seen if this study found stats on long bone cancers. Apparently neutering increases the risk.

It looks like the data collection is extremely comprehensive and ongoing. They are analysing as they go; it may well be that as the study dogs reach end of life, they will start to investigate these things too.
