New Toffee Thread

OH wants to do the toilet training but over the last couple of days, when I say Toffee needs to go, he's started saying 'I'll just drink my coffee' or 'I'll just read this page' or 'I'll just .......' - I wonder if the novelty is wearing off .
LOL! I'm awful with (almost) this. With Willow and then again with Luna, I found out pretty quickly that when you think it's time for puppy to go, you need to put everything down and take puppy. Now. J was so much better at this than me. I'd think, "I'll just have one more mouthful" or, "I'll just finish doing this". And then, the puppy would wee. So many times. I had to give myself a very stern talking to and say, as soon as I thought pup needed to go out, take pup out. No, you don't have time to walk across the room and put the plate on the counter. Put the plate on the floor (the others will lick it clean) and take puppy out!!

I think OH imagined it would only take a week before Toffee would be toilet trained  - he was mostly away when Ripple was tiny. It also drives him mad that Toffee doesn't wee immediately he goes out and gets distracted by flying things, mud eating and digging holes. Then he brings him in and he wees on the floor.

I'm sending OH swimming this morning as I think he needs a break, and I keep promising him it won't be as bad as this in 6 weeks time (I hope I'm right! )

Every single puppy teaches me this lesson. For some reason it doesn’t stick

Spencer is just beginning to go a bit longer between wees. The evenings are the worst - one after another after another after another! I think it’s when he gets exited. I even got a sample jar from the vets thinking he may have a bladder problem. But no, he’s just a widdler!

OH is still smitten :inlove: , he's just turned down a (lucrative) 2 week job in Taiwan at the beginning of next month to stay with Toffee. A bit of a contrast to when I had to travel to an Edinburgh hospital to get some, potentially serious, results from a scan; that day he said he couldn't possibly take any time off work to come with me :hmm:. (Jealous much )

Very strange evening. We believed we were booked in to puppy socialisation classes at a local vet ( not ours ). We rang this afternoon to check times and were told the classes were for clients only, pointed out we'd booked and they still insisted we couldn't go. The lady who runs the classes wasn't there to talk to and as she had taken our booking we didn't know what to do.

I spent the rest of the afternoon ringing round trying to find some puppy socialisation we could take Toffee to, but with no luck. Plenty of training classes, but I already have him booked in for these and just wanted him to be able to meet and play with a few dogs of his own age.

Eventually we decided to go to the the original class and try to find out what was going on. As we expected we weren't allowed to join the class and it would appear either some mistake was made taking our booking or someone had failed to let us know the rules had changed. I let OH do all the talking as I was very cross and didn't really trust myself not to be rude.

We were told there was a class running this evening, very local to us, that included puppy socialisation. So I drove virtually all the way back to only half a mile from home to find this class. When we got there the hall was in darkness and I decided we had been sent on a wild goose chase. Then all of these people and dogs appeared and the hall was unlocked, OH went to talk to the people running the class and it turned out to be RINGCRAFT FOR PUPPIES .
Anyway they invited us in to watch and everyone was lovely, they all said hello to Toffee and several puppies were brought across to meet him. He had a great time, and was really well behaved. They have invited us to come back and didn't charge us either.
Not quite how I expected my Wednesday evening to turn out.

Well how very Twilight Zone! Annoying vets - thank goodness they’re not your regulars, rubbish admin?! - but sounds like it ended well with Ringcraft for Puppies (not my world at all, but sounds very advanced?) and a nice group of people. Do you think you’ll go back?
100% for effort at least, good dog parenting! :D

That sounds very frustrating but the ringcraft people sound realy friendly - and actually might have been a better experience for Toffee. (I seem to be reading more and more lately about the importance of puppy socialisation classes being very carefully controlled so as not to have the reverse effect of sensitising puppies to other dogs and humans.)

Not my world either, but as it's only half a mile from home and they said we can come back just to watch, we probably will go back if I can't find anywhere else for puppy socialisation . I'm terrified of being roped in to walk up and down the ring though .

All the stress of yesterday and all the driving (I'd already been to an exercise class in the morning and taken Ripple to the beach) meant I fell asleep with the light on and forgot to set the alarm, and then overlaid. But, apart from Toffee having a poo on the newspaper side of his crate, there was no harm done. Although I've already put my phone in the washing bin this morning, so I think it's going to have a knock on effect :cwl:.

Oh that's interesting Joy, what sort of things can cause problems?

Playing with a puppy who is more forceful can lead a more timid puppy to develop fears, or a more confident puppy can practise bullying the more timid. I believe it's important that puppies should be equally matched in temperament as much as size.
Sarah Whitehead suggests that brief interactions with calm adult dogs are more beneficial for a puppy.

We want our adult dogs to greet politely but remain focused on us, so actual play with other puppies is not necessarily beneficial.

'Pass the puppy' (where another human holds your puppy on their lap while you have someone else's on yours) - Sarah Whitehead commented on this possibly leading to problems. The human is inevitably concentrating on their own puppy rather than the one pn their lap. The puppy can be giving out signals that it is unhappy/uncomfortable that are missed or mis-handled. For example a puppy may sit very still (freeze) and it could be interpreted that the puppy was happy rather than scared - possibly leading to fear of strangers later. Or a puppy may try to wriggle free (flight) and being constrained by the strange human again could lead to fears.

The IMDT course materials also emphasise that it's vital that interactions with humans and dogs need to be ones where the puppy feels safe and happy - exposure is not enough.
