Occipital Bone

Does anyone else’s lab have a really prominent occipital bone?

Stanley’s seems to be really prominent - I’m not sure if it always was or if I’ve just noticed it.

I’ll try and get a pic of it but he’s hiding from me because I’ve been poking at his head

Cassie does, depending on the angle of her and and ear position at any given time. I think it's quite prominent in a lot of gundog breeds, spaniels and setters and the like.

Yes, our springer's was very prominent, and more obvious from certain angles.

Maisy's is not that pronounced but I have seen loads of labs with really pointy skulls, don't worry.

Merlin's was extreme as a pup, we used to call Poppy and him 'Mrs Pointy and Mr Domey'. As his skull widened it became much less obvious though.

Carbon's is tiny compared to my Rotties'. Theirs were massive: I used to call them their brains and so rubbing them meant I was giving them a brain massage to make them smarter.

I give Carbon a brain massage too, but he doesn't really need it. He's already much too smart for me.

Oh yes, Lilly has been nicknamed cone head too.

Although she didn't use to be, the muscles around this area (the temporal muscles) were affected by her steroids earlier in the year. They caused temporal muscle atrophy. She is stuck with it now. You can build up bum muscles, but the temporal muscles aren't quite so easy!

When we picked up Snowie as a puppy, he had a prominent cone head. I knew nothing of this head shape and was worried he wasn’t really a Labrador!! Now, you can’t see anything—he has a very meaty fleshy head.

But yes, brain tumor would be my first worry, too. Although I guess there are other signs to look out for, like eyes all over the place and falling over. I’m guessing Stanley has none of those!
