Otter's Puppy Log

All my puppies have woken me at 5am and I used to go in the garden with them and sit in my nightie waiting for them to get tired again :) The early rising does seem to pass fairly quickly.

It is lovely to see Otter, she looks very intelligent and I am so looking forward to her puppy log. Maybe I can do it all with Rourke to keep him amused when he so restricted, re train him as if he was a baby!

Well you’re already doing significantly better than we did with Stanley because for her to wake up means she was asleep.

Stanley never slept at all 😭
Err... not quite this morning she was asleep, so we woke her. The previous nights she started to yell the place down at 4.30am! We gave her a minute or two, then quietly let her out for a wee and back in. She absolutely wouldn't settle, but that's OK she is just a wee baby. I don't want her to cry for more than a minute because we want the crate to be a warm, safe place to be and not feel distressed. :)

While Otter is snoozing in her crate, ( not for long methinks....) a quick update :)

Yesterday we had lots of fun playing "Let's explore Funny things" and "Reflex to Name" :) .....as well as chew my owner's hand, feet, clothes then chase poor Stoli around the garden!

Let's explore funny things....

This is a game where we placed different textures, shapes, things that rolled on the driveway and explored together. The aim here is to build confidence whilst building resilience when encountering unusual and surprising objects. We kept it very low key, more about having fun, focussing more of textures and movement rather than any sudden sounds. Scattering kibble on bubble wrap and letting her explore, a large flowerpot that rolled, a 5l plastic bottle that was scrunched up so made a noise when it moved. Bit of carpet etc..... Otter thought this was the best game ever and ran off with the scrunched up bottle making one hell of a racket! :) @Beanwood later popped on a HiVis jacket, and a hat and played some recall games, when we were happy she wasn't upset by his changed appearance. :inlove:

Do you think having the other dogs around her gives her more confidence in new situations Kate?
I am sure it helps :) They are all pretty laid back! Benson though does like to nick her toys!

What's the sound you are making? xx
Ah, that sound is just for encouragement, we use "Pup, pup, pup! In a happy voice. It's not a recall, just pairing running towards us with good stuff right now. A verbal cue like "come" is one syllable and can sound a bit harsh :) Nothing is on cue yet, just play and confidence building. :)

I'm not jealous, no, not at all! Nope. :shake:

She's so adorable, I want to steal her! She's so much finer than my hippo was at that age, and I love how full of beans she is :inlove:

Plastic water bottles, can't beat 'em for fun. Later on, you could try adding a couple of pebbles into the bottle to add even more noise. I wish I'd done more with this sort of thing with W&S at a young age. Willow loved water bottles, and I did put things in them, but I think I stopped with all of that too early rather than keeping it going through into later puppyhood and adolescence. Live and learn!

Boy am I tired this morning! I knew what to expect, however, this whirling dervish is exhausting! I need eyes in the back of my head, side of my head.....well actually I just need 360 degrees vision!

Otter is now a bit more settled and has launched into full IHAVETOEXPLOREEVERYTHINGNOW mode, and how do puppies do this? With their little cute mouths, anything that moves is fair game as far as she is concerned. So in defense, I am permanently armed with kibble, clicker and soft toy to poke back at her. Luckily she adores food and considers herself to be a poor starved puppy, this helps to switch her into playing the games we have learnt. Zen face is really useful, treats come from looking at my face, and are delivered in the same position, she can't lunge at me when focussing intently. It is also a great game for bringing those arousal levels down.

Did I say she was into everything??

Oh, but isn't she a cutie when relaxing!
