Primrose Puppy Log

f the breeder is in touch with the other owners, then it would be worth telling them to pass the info on... Just in case the other pups are having similar symptoms and they think it's just puppy tummy.
I agree, especially if you think it's possible pup came home with giardia, with Quinn testing negative. Did you have the worming schedule when Primrose came home? Might be worth a look as some worming schedules are better than others at preventing giardia in young puppies.

Yes, we have the worming schedule, and she was wormed starting at two weeks and was sent home with panacur to continue for 5 days. I emailed the breeder to let her know.

Though we had a similar situation with Bear... Despite three puppy Drontal worming treatments, he had both hookwork and roundworm at 5-6 months... It took two doses of adult strength wormer to shift it, so I think puppy wormers might be a little too gentle on occasion.

Panacur is not specifically puppy wormer, it is a liquid where 0.5ml per kg is given
It is a strange schedule 5 days of panacur? Usually it is given to the dam starting at day 40 until 2 days post whelp.. then pups at 3 weeks, 5 weeks and 7 weeks for 3 days each time.

We give the mums drontal at the 6 week stage of pregnancy (unless they aren’t able to take drontal due to sickness). We then give mum & pups Panacur at 2 weeks and 5 weeks for 3 days, then the puppies get it the 5 days before they go home (so between 7&8 weeks).
We have on occasion given Panacur from the 6 week stage of the pregnancy but not very often as it can be such a hassle for owners who don’t normally use it!

The schedule she came home with is:
2 weeks - strongidT
4 weeks - strongidT
6 weeks - Panacur
6 weeks - revolution (.5ml)
7- 8 weeks (5 days) - panacur
Sent home with (5days)- panacur

That seems like quite a lot 🤔
It does...only panacur is effective against giardia, so it is possible the pups got it from the dam/other dogs unless she was treated during pregnancy, as well as other household dogs. The dams throw off encysted eggs deep in the muscle which are the activated by her pregnancy. This is how pups can get infected. It happens sometimes despite the best worming routines, not the breeders fault but definitely worth mentioning. Luckily it appears Primose is a robust wee thing and only mildly infected :inlove:

Poor Primrose. Hope she’s better soon. What a worry for you with a new puppy. But good that you now know what you’re dealing with.

This worming discussion is fascinating, I had no idea that it has to start during pregnancy. I'm sorry to hear that Primrose has it, but I'm glad that she's coping with it well. She's as cute as a button, total angel face 😆 I'm very much enjoying the photos and stories even though I haven't commented until now.

I started the meds last night - turns out poor innocent Quinn needs to take it too. Primrose is not slowed down a bit by this - even her poops firmed up once I started her on the vet probiotic I had on hand.

I stayed up late doing loads of hot laundry - all the dog beds, blankets, soft toys, couch covers and pillows. Dishwasher full of dog toys, disinfected the floors, washed our slippers, cleaned the crates. OH is power washing the deck and disinfecting it today while I do upstairs floors and our bedding just in case. Bathed Prim and have been wiping both of theirs paws every time they go out. I'll bathe Prim daily and Quinn the last day of the meds. What a nightmare.
