Proud and relieved - Retrievers are amazing!

We had bit of a drama yesterday on our afternoon walk. I was doing some retrieving with Maisy, nothing to gundog standards so no comments on that please, but our way of playing together and Maisy retrieving which she loves of course. So whilst running through the grass and fetching and finding her stick, she gets a little bit of grass by her eye. I kneel to remove it but have to prop my glasses on my head so I can see close up as I am far-sighted. I get up then and realise they are gone! They have fallen off and must be in the grass somewhere.

Well now I have no glasses on so cannot see where the hell they are on the ground - the frames are brown and the grass is brown, I get down on my hands and knees skimming through the long grass (I'm not proud). I ask Maisy to 'find it' but she keeps roaring off and bringing me the stick. I give up and decide to race home, get my spare glasses, race back in time to find them before the light is gone as it will soon be dark. I try to mark the spot with something - a stick (Maisy runs off with it), a deftly sculpted pile of grass (Maisy pounces on it), in the end I just look where the trees are and try to memorise the place.

On my way back we are distracted by loads of things - children playing, one of her dog friends, etc. - Maisy is really good and comes back to me quickly when told as we race off home. She probably senses my panic.

Finally, we get back to the spot, the light is dimming.

My glasses are nowhere to be seen, I am scanning the area foot by foot but no sign of them.

In one last attempt I ask Maisy 'find it', then I hear a clacking noise and there she is several yards away with my glasses in her mouth, looking at me with a cheeky grin. What a relief! And how proud am I of her now? Wow, I would never have found them as they were nearly in the middle of the field, not where I thought at all.

I was going to leave Maisy at home but decided not to, thank goodness for retrievers!
(although a lot of trouble would have been avoided if she had done that in the first place)

Well done Maisy-pup, what a clever girl. No doubt she didn't find them first time because she reckoned there'd be another run and fetch session when you had to come back later. Not daft these dogs

She might have had them all the time, hiding them so we would come back for a second walk - hhmmm!
